Hoy 2 de febrero se celebra la Virgen de la Candelaria. En Cuba, muchos la recuerdan con una vieja tradición que aún se mantiene a pesar del paso del tiempo: cortándose las puntas del cabello, para que crezca más fuerte y sano, y podando las plantas, para que igualmente sigan desarrollándose con mayor vigor.
En Cuba, los festejos perviven hasta la actualidad en todos esos territorios y a lo largo del país. Desde el siglo XVIII comenzaron a celebrarse las fiestas en el poblado de Ceiba Mocha, en la occidental provincia de Matanzas, en tributo a la Candelaria, como expresión de la cultura de nativos de la región de Alicante e Islas Canarias, que emigraron de la Península de La Florida, entonces colonia hispana, donde se asentaban.
El habanero municipio de Guanabacoa posee su Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, histórica joya arquitectónica que data de hace más de 270 años.
El majestuoso templo, de dimensiones y distribución catedralicias, es uno de los más grandes construidos en el siglo XVIII.
Según la tradición católica, es en esta fecha cuando se cumplen 40 días después del nacimiento de Jesús (25 de diciembre). Por ello, María y José acudieron al Templo a ofrecer su sacrificio y a presentar al niño. Allí se encontraba el anciano Simeón, que tenía fama de sabio, quien dijo de Jesús que era “luz para iluminar a las naciones”. Por eso la Iglesia bendice las velas –las candelas- este día.
LA CANDELARIA: VENERADA EN CUBA, AMERICA LATINA Y ESPAÑA.
La virgen de la Candelaria siempre fue muy venerada en Cuba. Es la patrona de cinco pueblos: Candelaria, en Artemisa; Consolación del Sur, en Pinar del Río; además de Ceiba Mocha, en el municipio de Matanzas; Morón, en Ciego de Ávila, y Wajay, en Boyeros, en La Habana.
Las festividades en su honor siempre han convocado multitudes. El cantante Willy Chirino, de Consolación del Sur, recordó en su cuenta de Facebook cómo se vivía la devoción popular en esta fecha.
“¡Esta es la mía! Todos los 2 de febrero celebrábamos en mi natal Consolación del Sur las Fiestas Patronales de La Virgen de La Candelaria. Recuerdo que mi viejo me vestía de saco y corbata para tan esperada ocasión. También era el día en que venían los cantantes y las orquestas más famosas de la época y yo me sentía más feliz que un chivo en una hortaliza”.
La Virgen de la Candelaria es también la patrona de la ciudad de Camagüey. A ella está dedicada la Iglesia Catedral de esa provincia, un templo de 400 años, que fue nombrado Basílica Menor por el Papa Francisco en 2014, y declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.
No solo en Cuba se venera esta advocación mariana. El opositor venezolano Henrique Capriles también ha hecho pública su devoción en su cuenta de Facebook.
“Oh, Virgen de la Candelaria, te damos gracias, Madre y Señora nuestra; conscientes de nuestras debilidades acudimos a ti, somos tus hijos y nos ponemos en tus manos, haz que con tu poderosa intercesión sea concedido lo que solicitamos y no nos dejes sin tu amparo y maternal cuidado, para que nos eduques y logres hacer de nosotros verdaderos hijos de Dios. Amén”.

Festivities in her honor have always drawn crowds. The singer Willy Chirino, from Consolación del Sur, recalled on his Facebook account how popular devotion was lived on this date.
“This is mine! Every February 2nd, in my native Consolación del Sur, we celebrated the Patron Saint Festivities of La Virgen de La Candelaria. I remember that my old man dressed me in a jacket and tie for such a long-awaited occasion. It was also the day when the most famous singers and orchestras of the time came and I felt happier than a goat in a vegetable garden”.
The Virgin of Candelaria is also the patron saint of the city of Camagüey. The Cathedral Church of that province is dedicated to her, a 400-year-old temple, which was named a Minor Basilica by Pope Francis in 2014, and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Not only in Cuba is this Marian dedication venerated. Venezuelan opponent Henrique Capriles has also made his devotion public on his Facebook account.
“Oh, Virgin of Candelaria, we thank you, our Mother and Lady; aware of our weaknesses we come to you, we are your children and we put ourselves in your hands, make that with your powerful intercession what we request is granted and do not leave us without your protection and maternal care, so that you educate us and make us true children of God. Amen”.
