José Tejedor Sibate, más conocido como “El Ciego Maravilloso” por su condición de invidente fue un compositor, guitarrista y cantante, quién llegaría a ser uno de los más conocidos y populares cantantes de la Isla, particularmente interpretando boleros y canciones románticas.
Nacido en la Habana en Agosto de 1922 José Tejedor comenzó su carrera haciendo presentaciones en su barrio, Santos Suárez; desde entonces atrajo la atención por su voz cristalina muy bien timbrada y afinada.
No le resultó fácil el camino por ser ciego, negro y pobre en un época en que eso constituía un freno, época marcada por una sociedad racista; pero el artista, seguro de sus condiciones vocales y de su valía no se amilanó y consiguió subir la senda con esfuerzo, persistencia y dedicación. Se destacó como compositor, guitarrista e intérprete.

Comenzó a presentarse en 1937 en el programa de radio La Corte Suprema del Arte en la estación CMQ. Fue de gran importancia para su carrera el conocer a Luis Oviedo Medero, con quien entablaría una amistad y haría numerosas colaboraciones musicales en las que Oviedo cantaba con voz de falsete
Más tarde, Tejedor sería contratado por la productora Discuba. Es entonces que en el año 1959, ya como cantante profesional, realizó sus primeras grabaciones. La pequeña disquera Rosy fue la primera empresa discográfica que le grabó junto al pianista y arreglista Javier Vázquez.
Con la voz de falsete de Luís Oviedo y no de segundo. Sobre la voz prima, él interpretaba la mitad de la obra sobre lo que cantaba Tejedor y el dúo resultaba muy agradable. Estos dos cantores habaneros hicieron las delicias de melodías inolvidables.
Con el auge del ciego que cantaba tan maravillosamente los boleros y sobre todo los boleros morunos, la disquera Areito también lo contrató para grabar, acompañado entonces por el conjunto de Javier Vázquez. Lo mismo hizo la casa grabadora Siboney.
Posteriormente la productora Discuba lo contrató para grabar un grupo de obras bajo sus siglas, en varios discos, que invadieron las reproductoras de los bares y cantinas. Las grabaciones de José Tejedor se vendían como pan caliente.
Desde 1962 este intérprete imprescindible para la música romántica cantó acompañado por el conjunto Musicuba.
Tejedor con su peculiar estilo, matizado por una gran emotividad, logró convertir en éxitos rotundos distintas creaciones musicales, entre ellas Llora corazón, Escándalo, En el balcón aquel y Celos locos.
Grabó varios discos de larga duración y numerosos singles.
Tejedor y Luís se han mantenido por derecho propio en programas radiales especializados en música de siempre o del ayer porque sus admiradores así lo han querido, con una gran estabilidad en las frecuencias de la radio nacional, donde se le puede escuchar con asiduidad. Sus grabaciones siguen teniendo el brillo y la frescura que les caracterizan.
Luego de aproximadamente cinco décadas de vida artística, José Tejedor falleció el dos de noviembre de 1991, en Lawton, ciudad de La Habana.

José Tejedor Sibate, better known as “El Ciego Maravilloso” because of his blindness, was a composer, guitarist, and singer, who would become one of the best known and most popular singers on the Island, particularly performing boleros and romantic songs.
