La Ceiba, llena de leyenda y misterio, con un encanto especial. Si a un cubano se le cuestiona sobre el misticismo que despierta este árbol originario de la América tropical, diría que “es bendito”, que sus antecesores decían que es sagrado y que es el árbol más respetuoso del mundo.
Y algunos repetirán una y otra vez, como nos cuenta la leyenda: “Es el verdadero árbol del santísimo” “Del Poder de Dios”, “Dios está en la Ceiba, y el viento no tumba la Ceiba”, “La Ceiba es santa”, “Es el árbol de la Virgen María”, “Madre de los árboles y del hombre”.
La ceiba es una planta bendita y se dice que ni las tormentas más fieras logran desgajar, ni los rayos fulminar, como si hasta los elementos desencadenados y fenómenos naturales le temieran, y en torno a la mística que la rodea muchos son sus poderes intrínsecos, al extremo de revertir la esterilidad de las mujeres.
En Cuba, la ceiba es un árbol sagrado cargado de leyendas y misterios y la creencia popular de su santidad data de varios siglos atrás, atribuida a los esclavos de origen africano traídos a la isla por los colonizadores españoles, en un rito trasmitido de generación en generación entre negros y blancos.

La ceiba, árbol sagrado de los Yorubas, es la suma de la fuerza mística de la vegetación.
Ninguna persona puede cortar o quemar una ceiba, no sin antes adoptar las precauciones requeridas y pedir permiso previo a los orishas y se dice que el sólo hecho de tocar su tronco fortifica, mientras los cubanos piensan que dándole tres vueltas a partir de las 12 de la noche del 16 noviembre le concede salud y paz.
LA CEIBA DE SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA HABANA…
Plantada el 16 de noviembre ya cuya sombra se celebró la primera misa para festejar el nacimiento del pueblo, sentándose sus bases civiles y religiosas.
La Ceiba que formaba parte de una de las tradiciones más antiguas de los habaneros que la rondaban en silencio y echaban una moneda a sus raíces para solicitarle al santo patrón el cumplimiento de tres deseos fue removida en febrero de 2016.
La añeja tradición se cumple en esa fecha, al pie del árbol más reverenciado en Cuba por ateos, católicos, evangelistas y practicantes de cultos de santería, en el lugar conocido por El Templete, ubicado en La Habana Vieja, proclamada por la UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1982, por sus valores históricos y culturales.
El sitio ubicado en la antigua Plaza de Armas del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad, vecino del Castillo de la Fuerza y los palacios del Segundo Cabo y de los Capitanes Generales, emblemáticas edificaciones del poder colonial en la mayor de las Antillas, revitaliza cada año la simbólica carga santa o bruja de la ceiba.
Al gigantesco árbol solemnizado en 1828 por el ilustre Obispo Espada, acuden hombres, mujeres y niños, con la secreta esperanza de cumplir sus más íntimos deseos y allí es anualmente recordada la celebración de la primera misa y cabido de La Habana, que se remonta al 16 de noviembre de 1519, fecha tomada como fundación de la villa.
A mediados del siglo XVIII murió la primera ceiba y ha sido reemplazada varias veces hasta llegar a la actual, porque la que fue sembrada en el año 1960 ya mostraba señales de deterioro debido al efecto de una plaga de comején.
EL ARBOL DE LA PAZ EN SANTIAGO DE CUBA…
Muy cerca de la loma de San Juan, el 17 de julio de 1898 fue acordada la capitulación de Santiago de Cuba bajo una hermosa ceiba, que pasó a la historia con el nombre de “Árbol de la Paz”, rodeado de cañones y tarjas para significar su papel en el fin de la guerra.
Pocos meses después de cumplirse el centenario del hecho histórico vencido por el tiempo el árbol cayó para siempre; solo su enorme tronco sigue allí.Tanto la Loma de San Juan como El Árbol de la Paz, unidos por la historia y la proximidad constituyen un conjunto monumental interesante por su concepción de integración al medio natural. En 1998, a 100 años del histórico suceso el parque histórico-conmemorativo fue sometido a un proceso de conservación integral.
