MANY CUBANS have received with relief the news of the arrival of the “Perseverancia”, a modern ferry announced with much fanfare by the Government that will cover the journey between Batabanó, in the south of the province of Artemisa, and Nueva Gerona in five hours and in which holds twice a load of current catamarans.
No one knows exactly where it came from, although the National News reported that it was acquired for a “millionaire” amount somewhere in Asia – which most Cubans have understood as China – from where it came to the island by crossing seas and oceans. The report highlights it as an “important litmus test”, despite the fact that the feat is none other than fulfilling the purpose for which it was designed: to navigate.

MUCHOS CUBANOS han recibido con alivio la noticia de la llegada del “Perseverancia”, un moderno ferry anunciado a bombo y platillo por el Gobierno que cubrirá el trayecto entre Batabanó, al sur de la provincia de Artemisa, y Nueva Gerona en cinco horas y en el que cabe el doble de carga que los actuales catamaranes.
Nadie sabe de dónde viene con exactitud, aunque el Noticiero Nacional aseguró que fue adquirido por un importe “millonario” en algún lugar de Asia –que la mayoría de cubanos ha entendido como China– desde el que llegó a la Isla atravesando mares y océanos. El reporte lo resalta como una “importante prueba de fuego”, a pesar de que la hazaña no es otra que cumplir con el fin para el que fue diseñado: navegar.
En el trayecto se “demostró la calidad de los sistemas propulsores y otros parámetros en general”, además de probar otros sistemas y dispositivos de la nave. En la nueva embarcación caben 430 personas, además de vehículos y carga.

Sin embargo, el desconocido fabricante se comprometió con las autoridades cubanas a dos años y medio de explotación sin necesidad de regresar al astillero para las tareas de mantenimiento.
En la prensa oficial, los pineros han acogido la noticia con entusiasmo, ya que son constantes las quejas por las conexiones con la isla de la Juventud. Actualmente,según la información oficial, están saliendo dos catamaranes al día que cubren el trayecto, pero los problemas de oxidación y otros desperfectos técnicos complican las salidas y su puntualidad, provocando numerosas anulaciones y las consiguientes quejas.
La incomodidad de los asientos, la mala oferta gastronómica y los retrasos de la conexión por ómnibus entre el puerto de Batabanó y La Habana, donde se dirigen mayoritariamente los pasajeros, están también entre las grandes reclamaciones de los viajeros.
La alternativa está en los vuelos domésticos, pero la crisis de Cubana de Aviación y los recortes de trayectos por la falta de combustible han reducido las posibilidades de realizar el viaje por aire.
