EL CARDENAL Beniamino Stella, enviado del papa Francisco, pidió este miércoles en La Habana la puesta en libertad de los cubanos que participaron en las protestas antigubernamentales del 11 de julio de 2021.
Stella hizo estas declaraciones en los últimos compases de su visita a Cuba, donde ha rememorado el viaje que hizo hace 25 años al país el entonces papa Juan Pablo II, considerado entonces un gesto histórico.
“El papa desea mucho que haya una respuesta positiva” del Gobierno cubano ante las peticiones de la Iglesia para la liberación de los manifestantes condenados, aseguró el cardenal en declaraciones a los medios acreditados en la Isla.
Consideró a este respecto secundario que se defina legalmente como una amnistía o una clemencia, porque “las palabras pueden ser también secundarias”.
Cuba “debe ser libre de toda injerencia”, pero también favorecer que “sus hijos sean hombres y mujeres libres”
“Pero es importante que los jóvenes que en un momento manifestaron su pensamiento de la forma que conocemos puedan volver a sus casas”, destacó.
El cardenal aseguró que durante su visita a Cuba ha podido manifestar a las autoridades cubanas este “anhelo” de la Iglesia y se mostró deseoso de que a partir del “momento útil y positivo” que ha supuesto su viaje “nazcan cosas nuevas para el pueblo cubano”.
Poco antes, en un discurso en la Universidad de La Habana ante el presidente cubano, Miguel Díaz-Canel, el enviado del papa Francisco subrayó que “no se puede subordinar la libertad a ningún cálculo de intereses, coyunturas, esperando mejores tiempos”.
Agregó asimismo que Cuba “debe ser libre de toda injerencia”, pero también favorecer que “sus hijos sean hombres y mujeres libres”. La libertad, añadió, tiene que permitir el crecimiento material y espiritual.
Stella llamó a “promover la reconciliación y la fraternidad” desde la “diversidad” y no “por similitud de ideas”, y reivindicó una “cultura del encuentro” que fomente la creación de “puentes” por los que “transitar en común”.
En sus declaraciones a los medios, el cardenal reivindicó el papel del diálogo, desde “la bondad y el respeto”, tanto en sus conversaciones con altos cargos cubanos como en las relaciones entre La Habana y Estados Unidos. “Hablando se pueden encontrar soluciones”, afirmó.
El Vaticano desea que “los que tienen poder se puedan hablar, se puedan escuchar mutuamente”, indicó Stella, porque de “ahí pueden salir cosas que beneficien al pueblo cubano”.

“Ojalá se dé y se dé pronto (este diálogo) y se constituya en un paso importante para muchos avances que el pueblo cubano necesita mucho. Hay cosas que se deben hacer y hacer pronto”, agregó.
También hizo referencia a la fuerte migración que vive actualmente Cuba, que ha perdido alrededor de un 3% de su población solo en 2022, principalmente por la severa crisis económica, pero también por la represión política.
El enviado del pontífice pidió que los cubanos puedan hacer realidad en su país “sus anhelos y esperanzas” y que los jóvenes realicen allí sus “sueños”.
El papa Francisco fue uno de los artífices internacionales del acercamiento entre Estados Unidos y Cuba que se produjo entre 2014 y 2017, con los ex presidentes Barack Obama y Raúl Castro, una fase conocida como el deshielo.
No obstante, la llegada de Donald Trump a la Casa Blanca acabó con este proceso e incluso lo revirtió, con la aplicación de nuevas sanciones -que se sumaron a las ya vigentes- y la inclusión de Cuba en la lista de países patrocinadores del terrorismo.

En los últimos meses se ha dado un discreto y pragmático acercamiento entre los dos países en distintas áreas de interés común, como la migración y la seguridad nacional, y se han eliminado algunas de las últimas sanciones de Washington.
Stella llegó a Cuba el 23 de enero en un viaje enmarcado en el 25 aniversario del viaje pastoral a Cuba de Juan Pablo II, el primer papa que visitaba la Isla. Posteriormente acudieron a Cuba sus dos sucesores, Benedicto XVI y Francisco.
Tras unos primeros días en La Habana, en los que tuvo oportunidad de reunirse con algunos altos cargos del Gobierno cubano, Stella inició un viaje para visitar todas las diócesis católicas del país y entrevistarse con sus responsables.

CARDINAL Beniamino Stella, the envoy of Pope Francis, asked this Wednesday in Havana for the release of the Cubans who participated in the anti-government protests on July 11, 2021.
Stella made these statements in the last stages of his visit to Cuba, where he recalled the trip that the then Pope John Paul II made to the country 25 years ago, considered a historic gesture at the time.
“The Pope very much wants there to be a positive response” from the Cuban government to the Church’s requests for the release of the condemned protesters, the cardinal assured in statements to the accredited media on the island.
He considered that it is legally defined as an amnesty or clemency secondary in this regard, because “words can also be secondary”.

“But it is important that the young people who at one point expressed their thoughts in the way we know them can return to their homes,” he stressed.
The cardinal assured that during his visit to Cuba, he has been able to express to the Cuban authorities this “desire” of the Church and expressed his hope that from the “useful and positive moment” that his trip has entailed “new things will be born for the people Cuban”.
Shortly before, in a speech at the University of Havana before Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, Pope Francis’ envoy stressed that “freedom cannot be subordinated to any calculation of interests, circumstances, waiting for better times.”
He also added that Cuba “must be free of all interference,” but also encourage “its children to be free men and women.” Freedom, he added, has to allow material and spiritual growth.
Stella called to “promote reconciliation and fraternity” from “diversity” and not “by the similarity of ideas”, and called for a “culture of encounter” that encourages the creation of “bridges” over which “to travel in common”.
In his statements to the media, the cardinal vindicated the role of dialogue, based on “kindness and respect”, both in his conversations with high-ranking Cuban officials and in relations between Havana and the United States. “Talking can find solutions,” he said.
The Vatican wants “those who have power to be able to talk to each other, to be able to listen to each other,” Stella said, because “things can come out of that that benefit the Cuban people.”

“Hopefully (this dialogue) happens and happens soon and becomes an important step for many advances that the Cuban people greatly need. There are things that must be done and done soon,” he added.
He also made reference to the strong migration that Cuba is currently experiencing, which has lost around 3% of its population in 2022 alone, mainly due to the severe economic crisis, but also due to political repression.
The pontiff’s envoy asked that Cubans be able to make their “desires and hopes” come true in their country and that young people realize their “dreams” there.
Pope Francis was one of the international architects of the rapprochement between the United States and Cuba that took place between 2014 and 2017, with former presidents Barack Obama and Raúl Castro, a phase known as the thaw.
However, the arrival of Donald Trump to the White House put an end to this process and even reversed it, with the application of new sanctions -in addition to those already in force- and the inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
Stella asked that Cubans be able to make “their wishes and hopes” come true in their country and that young people realize their “dreams” there.
In recent months there has been a discreet and pragmatic rapprochement between the two countries in different areas of common interest, such as migration and national security, and some of Washington’s latest sanctions have been removed.
Stella arrived in Cuba on January 23 on a trip framed in the 25th anniversary of the pastoral trip to Cuba by John Paul II, the first pope to visit the island. Later, his two successors, Benedict XVI, and Francisco went to Cuba.
After a few days in Havana, in which he had the opportunity to meet with some senior officials of the Cuban government, Stella began a trip to visit all the Catholic dioceses in the country and meet with their leaders.
