¿Hubo tal personaje cuya muerte fue cantada por toda Cuba en un son con un estribillo que dice: “Ay Chacumbele, él mismito se mató”? ¿Verdad o mentira? ¿Fábula o realidad?
Te sorprenderás cuando te diga que fue un personaje real, que su verdadero nombre era José Ramón Chacón Vélez, y que nació el 9 de noviembre de 1912 en Santa Cruz del Sur, un poblado costero de la provincia cubana de Camaguey y cuyo violento fallecimiento dio pie a una frase popular de plena vigencia que conocen casi todos los oriúndos de la mayor isla del caribe.
LA REALIDAD EN LA VIDA DE CHACUMBELES
Su Padre muere en el ras de mar de 1932, que barre la ciudad, pero el muchacho y su perra Lolita logran salvarse trepándose a un gigantesco algarrobo y luego emprenden viaje a La Habana, donde él se busca la vida de noche vendiendo gardenias y mariposas en el Parque Central y de día consigue empleo de aprendiz de trapecista en la afamada compañia circense Santos y Artigas.

En ese momento, la estrella del espectáculo era el trapecista polaco Bronislav Korchinsky y José Ramón convertido en su discípulo pronto se revela como un nuevo talento de los aires, para tomar el nombre artístico de Chacumbeles y al incluir en el show a su inseparable Lolita como la primera perra acrobata de Cuba, llegan a ocupar un lugar de gran popularidad.
Korchinsky abandona Cuba atraído por un jugoso contrato en Estados Unidos y “El Intrépido Chacumbeles”, como era conocido, ocupa su lugar como la máxima atracción del circo Santos y Artigas, sumando a sus presentaciones a Ilona Szabó, judía húngara de belleza impactante que había llegado a la capital de la mayor de las Antillas por esas cosas del destino.
Chacumbeles se enamora perdidamente de Ilona y se convierte en su amante de turno en un descabellado romance y aunque al principio todo marcha bien, muy pronto la llamada Muñequita Húngara comienza a sentir la comezón de una nueva aventura y se fija en el negro norteamericano Harry Silver, el típico entertainer de los shows de minstrels.
Un día en que estaba Chacumbeles en la cuerda floja con Lolita, contempla a Ilona y Harry Silver malamente escondidos devorándose a besos, en un hecho tan bochornoso y su vez indignante que el destacado maromero pierde el equilibrio y cae al suelo arrastrando consigo a su fiel perrita, la cual murió aplastada por su dueño.
En los registros del circo Santos y Artigas, fundado en 1916 aparece el nombre de Chacumbeles.
Chacumbeles salva la vida, pero llegado al hospital los médicos le informan que había que operarlo de urgencia pues tenía varias fracturas, las dos piernas rotas, y una costilla había perforado su pulmó y allí permaneció seis largos y dolorosos meses hasta que se recupera, sin embargo queda completamente cojo y sin fuerza en las manos para retomar la gloria ganada en el trapecio.
Con el alma rota en mil pedazos y sumido en una profunda depresión, regresa Chacumbeles al mismo parque que lo vió llegar a La Habana, la capital y donde una vez vendiera flores a las jovencitas de sociedad, pero ahora como policias de recorrido, defraudado y agobiado por un dolor insoportable, hasta que una madrugada se quita la vida de un disparo.
LA MUERTE DE CHACUMBELES ECHA CANCION
En 1941 Chacumbeles pasó a la inmortalidad en una canción homónima, que suprime la ”s” final de su nombre, compuesta por Alejandro Mustelier y grabada por el Trío Servando Díaz en un disco de 78 rpm para la Victor, que recrea la supuesta tragedia y ubica a la cirquera húngara en la busqueda de aquel que traicionó una vez.
