DESGRANAN LOS DATOS. Todos negativos. La zafra azucarera se hunde, la producción de alimentos disminuye y el dinero para importar productos básicos escasean. En las actuales jornadas de la Asamblea Nacional, en el Palacio de las Convenciones de La Habana, se erige en toda su inmensidad, entre las butacas y las manos alzadas de los parlamentarios, el elefante de la urgencia de un cambio de sistema. Todos sienten su presencia y protagonismo, pero nadie se atreve a mencionarlo.
En lugar del gesto valiente de reconocer que el país tomó, hace seis décadas, el rumbo equivocado y que imponer un modelo centralizado nos condujo al abismo en el que estamos ahora, los delegados siguen insistiendo en recomendar medidas, ajustes y más controles para salir de la crisis. Pero con cada intervención y cada nueva cifra anunciada, va haciéndose más nítida la radiografía de ese paciente terminal que es la economía cubana. También va quedando claro que el modelo decretado por el Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) solo conduce al fracaso y que las autoridades no tienen la audacia ni la capacidad para mejorar nuestras vidas.
Nada de lo que se haga dentro de las leyes y postulados económicos del PCC logrará frenar la caída de la nación en los abismos de la miseria y el deterioro irreversible de su infraestructura
Gastan horas y horas en justificaciones, se extienden en explicar las maldades que les ha hecho el clima, la cercanía del vecino del Norte o el precio de la harina de trigo a nivel internacional, pero les falta el coraje para decir lo que tantos pensamos: este sistema hay que cambiarlo, desmontarlo y sustituirlo por otro que tenga menos consignas y más realidades. Nada de lo que se haga dentro de las leyes y postulados económicos del PCC logrará frenar la caída de la nación en los abismos de la miseria y el deterioro irreversible de su infraestructura.
El paquidermo se estira, barrita, sacude las orejas entre los parlamentarios. Algunos casi le rozan la trompa cuando cuestionan que a pesar de las nuevas directrices en la agricultura, el arroz que se consume en las mesas cubanas llega prácticamente en su totalidad desde el extranjero. El presidente de la Asamblea, Esteban Lazo, se pega a la cola del animal al afirmar que “estamos ya muy cansados de programas, medidas, estudios, diagnósticos”. Sin embargo, ninguno nombra al “elefante”, todos evaden definir como “fracaso” a esas decisiones que han alimentado y engordado al enorme mamífero en mitad del salón.

They break down the data. All negative. The sugar harvest plunges, food production declines and money to import basic products is scarce. In the current days of the National Assembly, in the Palace of Conventions in Havana, stands in all its immensity, between the seats and the raised hands of the parliamentarians, the elephant of the urgency of a change in the system. Everyone feels his presence and leadership, but no one dares to mention it.
Instead of the courageous gesture of acknowledging that the country took the wrong course six decades ago and that imposing a centralized model led us to the abyss we are in now, the delegates continue to insist on recommending measures, adjustments and more controls to get out of the crisis. But with each intervention and each new figure announced, the X-ray of that terminal patient that is the Cuban economy becomes clearer. It is also becoming clear that the model decreed by the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) only leads to failure and that the authorities do not have the audacity or the capacity to improve our lives.
Nothing that is done within the laws and economic postulates of the PCC will be able to stop the fall of the nation into the abysses of misery and the irreversible deterioration of its infrastructure.
They spend hours and hours justifying themselves, going to lengths to explain the evils that the climate has done to them, the proximity of their neighbor to the North or the international price of wheat flour, but they lack the courage to say what so many of us think: this system must be changed, dismantled and replaced by another that has fewer slogans and more realities. Nothing that is done within the laws and economic postulates of the PCC will be able to stop the fall of the nation into the abysses of misery and the irreversible deterioration of its infrastructure.
The pachyderm stretches, barrettes, shakes its ears among the parliamentarians. Some almost brush his trunk when they question that despite the new agricultural guidelines, the rice consumed on Cuban tables comes almost entirely from abroad. The president of the Assembly, Esteban Lazo, sticks to the tail of the animal when affirming that “we are already very tired of programs, measures, studies, diagnoses.” However, no one names the “elephant”, all avoid defining as “failure” those decisions that have fed and fattened the huge mammal in the middle of the room.
