También llamada Isla de Sabinal, al oeste de la bahía de Nuevitas y rodeada por el océano Atlántico, recibe este peculiar nombre por la vegetación única de la zona, similar al sándalo y al enebro. Además, se puede observar una gran cantidad de manglares.
Es la isla más meridional del archipiélago Jardines del Rey, y se encuentra al norte de la bahía de Nuevitas, al este de Cayo Guajaba y de la bahía de la Gloria y limita al norte con el océano Atlántico. Está conectada con Cuba continental al oeste de Nuevitas.
Esta isla tan especial que pertenece al archipiélago Jardines del Rey está separada del continente por bahías y ensenadas, y cuenta además con amplias playas y humedales. Resulta curioso que esta isla, junto a otras del mismo archipiélago, sea escenario de la novela Islas en el Golfo de Ernest Hemingway, donde el conocido escritor solía navegar con su yate “Pilar”.
El Faro Colón, uno de los más antiguos del país, construido en 1848 en el extremo norte de la isla, es la guía principal para los barcos que navegan en el Canal de las Bahamas.
FLORA Y FAUNA EXÓTICA
Posee una reserva natural de flamencos rosados y aves exóticas. Además, dentro de su fauna destacan pequeños mamíferos de la familia de los roedores llamados jutías; las jicoteas, pequeñas y simpáticas tortugas acuáticas y semiacuáticas; venados, cerdos, bovinos y tocororos, un tipo de ave cubana.
También es común escuchar al pájaro cantor llamado negrito, por su color oscuro. En cuanto a su flora, se pueden observar orquídeas, manglares, enebros, robles, cedros y guayacanes, entre otras especies únicas.
Cayo Sabinal es uno de los lugares más remotos de Cuba y en él se revelan los paisajes más bellos del país y repletos de las más importantes creaciones de la naturaleza. Es uno de los cayos más remotos de Cuba y está conectado a la provincia de Camagüey por una franja de tierra increíblemente estrecha en la punta de la costa norte.

Also called Isla de Sabinal (Sabinal Island), west of bahía de Nuevitas (Nuevitas Bay), and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, it receives this peculiar name because of the unique vegetation of the area, similar to sandalwood and juniper. In addition, a large number of mangroves can be seen.

EXOTIC FLORA AND FAUNA

It is one of the most remote keys in Cuba and is connected to the Camagüey province by an incredibly narrow strip of land at the tip of the north coast.
