The Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) will be the pivot of a political opening in Cuba, because of its involvement in national life and be “the strongest institution, cohesive and professional of the current system,” said Monday the Catholic magazine Espacio Lay.
The institution “is not directly engaged in harassment, has the respect of many citizens, is nationalist and feels-as I have understood, very committed to the harmonious development of the nation,” said Roberto Veiga, editor of the magazine, AFP reported.
“The FAR, as large conglomerate economic-political-military, will be key in the future of Cuba,” said for his part Lenier Gonzalez, one of the editors of Lay Space.
The magazine of the Archdiocese of Havana, one of the few publications outside state control, has been devoted in recent years to promote a national debate, including exiles.
The FAR, born in 1959, the rebel army of Fidel Castro, were directed from its founding until 2008 by General Raul Castro. His generals have a significant presence in the Political Bureau of the Communist Party (seven of 15 members), the Council of State and Council of Ministers.
They also have extensive involvement in the economy, mainly in tourism (hotels, marinas, airlines), currency shops, agricultural production and the redevelopment of the port of Mariel.
“At this point (of a political opening), the FAR should settle the tension between maintaining a huge power for themselves, they usurp the civil political work that should govern a republic, or, failing that, to facilitate reform of republican institutions by expanded national dialogue in a public sphere open and inclusive enough, “Gonzalez said.
“An army without economic power and under the control of the civil powers is an ideal that we get. Nevertheless, now the welfare of the nation claims to maintain a certain relative autonomy and economic self-sufficiency and social influence,” said Veiga.

‘Espacio Laical’: Las Fuerzas Armadas serán pivote de la apertura política.
La revista católica considera que la institución ‘no está directamente comprometida con vejaciones’ y ‘goza del respeto de muchos ciudadanos’.
Las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias (FAR) serán el pivote de una apertura política en Cuba, debido a su implicación con la vida nacional y ser “la institución más fuerte, cohesionada y profesional del actual sistema”, sostuvo este lunes la revista católica Espacio Laical.
La institución “no está directamente comprometida con vejaciones, goza del respeto de muchos ciudadanos, es nacionalista y se siente —según tengo entendido— muy comprometida con el desarrollo armónico de la nación”, afirmó Roberto Veiga, editor de la revista, reseñó AFP.
“Las FAR, como gran conglomerado militar-económico-político, será una pieza clave en el futuro de Cuba”, señaló por su parte Lenier González, otro de los editores de Espacio Laical.
La revista de la Arquidiócesis de La Habana, una de las pocas publicaciones fuera del control estatal, se ha dedicado en los últimos años a promover un debate nacional, incluyendo a los exiliados.
Las FAR, nacidas en 1959 del Ejército Rebelde de Fidel Castro, fueron dirigidas desde su fundación hasta 2008 por el general Raúl Castro. Sus generales tienen una importante presencia en el Buró Político del Partido Comunista (siete de 15 miembros), el Consejo de Estado y el Consejo de Ministros.
También tienen amplia participación en la economía, fundamentalmente en el turismo (hoteles, marinas, líneas aéreas), tiendas divisas, la producción agropecuaria y en las obras de ampliación del puerto del Mariel.
“Llegado este momento (de una apertura política), las FAR deberán saldar la tensión entre mantener un poder descomunal para sí, que usurparía el quehacer político civil que debe regir una república, o en su defecto, facilitar la reforma de la institucionalidad republicana mediante un diálogo nacional ampliado, en una esfera pública lo suficientemente abierta e inclusiva”, señaló González.
“Un Ejército sin poder económico y bajo el control total de los poderes civiles resulta un ideal que hemos de conseguir. No obstante, ahora el bienestar de la nación reclama que mantenga una relativa autonomía y cierta autosuficiencia económica, así como influjo social”, dijo Veiga.
