El proyecto fue impulsado por integrantes de la comunidad de exiliados cubanos de La Florida y lo que se busca es que sea aprobado por la Comisión del Condado Miami-Dade el próximo 15 de julio. El museo se montaría detrás del American Airlines Arena y frente a la Bahía de Biscayne.
Según informa El Nuevo Herald, la resolución debía discutirse este 1° de julio, pero fue postergada. De ser aprobada, la alcaldía del Condado negociaría con la organización Cuban Exile History Museum la renta del terreno y la construcción del recinto en la llamada parcela B, en consulta con la compañía operadora del American Airlines Arena, Basketball Properties Ltd., y con The Heat Group.
Por su parte, el abogado Nicolás Gutiérrez, de padres cubanos y uno de los promotores de la iniciativa, subrayó que el museo sería “una realización de la añoranza de mucha gente de esta comunidad”.
“He visto a la generación de mi papá morir siempre añorando lo que perdieron en Cuba y sin poder disfrutar, hasta cierto punto, lo que se ha creado aquí en el exilio”, agregó.
El mismo periódico señala que la comisión tendría que considerar el día 15 dos propuestas diferentes para la parcela, la construcción del museo y de un parque público, en un área que desde 1998 debía ser utilizada como “espacio público abierto hasta ser desarrollada”, según consta en el documento a ser discutido.
La construcción del edificio, estimada en $120 millones, sería con fondos privados, que los promotores piensan recaudar entre las distintas comunidades de emigrados cubanos alrededor del mundo, para lo cual piensan abrir dos centros, en Miami y en Londres. Pero, “primero necesitamos asegurar el pedacito de tierra”, dijo Gutiérrez.
El proyecto está planificado para llevarse a cabo en un plazo de cinco años y estaría listo para su inauguración el 1° de enero de 2019.
