CUBA QUIERE FRENAR LAS DESERCIONES EN EL BÉISBOL DEL PAÍS.

A un año de los cambios de la política deportiva de Cuba que abrieron las puertas de ligas extranjeras a peloteros de la isla, el éxito de esa medida está en entredicho, ya que las deserciones no dan tregua.

El campeonato local de la lista puso en marcha el domingo su edición número 54 sin varias de sus principales estrellas.

Las deserciones persisten, pese a que el gobierno aflojó la prohibición al deporte profesional en la isla, en pie durante más de medio siglo, al permitir que algunos peloteros pudieran jugar en el exterior tras el término de la temporada local. También aprobaron aumentos en los pagos que reciben los deportistas de la isla, incluyendo bonos por desempeño y colectivo.

El estelar infielder Yulieski Gourriel es uno de los cuatro peloteros autorizados por la isla a jugar en la liga profesional de Japón. Los otros son los jardineros Alfredo Despaigne y Frederich Cepeda y el lanzador Héctor Mendoza.

Los cambios buscan frenar la fuga de talento, pero el embargo impuesto por Estados Unidos prohíbe que los deportistas tributen al fisco cubano lo que devengan en las Grandes Ligas de Norteamérica, así que para recibir los enormes contratos deben salir de la isla.

Ese es el camino que han seguido peloteros como el toletero Yasmani Tomás y los lanzadores Diosdany Castillo y Yasmani Hernández al desertar de la isla en meses recientes en busca de probar suerte en las Grandes Ligas, donde ha habido una avalancha de contrataciones de peloteros cubanos en los últimos años, encabezada por Yasiel Puig, José Abreu, Yoenis Céspedes y Rusney Castillo.

Trece cubanos firmaron un contrato con clubes de Grandes Ligas o menores este año, tres más con respecto a 2013, en tanto que 25 jugadores nacidos en Cuba disputaron al menos un partido en las mayores durante esta temporada.

Transcurrido un año, la calidad del campeonato local sufre por las deserciones. Varios observadores han notado que casi una cuarta parte de los peloteros que van a intervenir en la presente temporada son novatos, casi en su totalidad sustituyendo a jugadores que salieron de la isla.

“No hay manera que económicamente Cuba pueda retener en el país a sus mejores jugadores de manera que la liga cubana tenga el nivel que era el suyo hace cinco o diez años”, afirmó Peter C. Bjarkman, autor del texto “A History of Cuban Baseball, 1864-2006”.

Gourriel firmó en mayo con el Yokohama Bay Stars un contrato por esta temporada de alrededor de un millón de dólares, una suma muy inferior a los 72,5 millones que Rusney Castillo recibió en agosto al fichar con los Medias Rojas de Boston.

Cuando se le pidió que comparase los dos contratos, Gourriel se echó a reír y contestó que “a simple vista se ve que es un contrato muy superior”. Tras una pausa, agregó, “pero son circunstancias muy diferentes, es la primera vez que Cuba se abre a jugar en ligas extranjeras, no habíamos tenido oportunidad de jugar aquí y ellos (los japoneses) no sabían si íbamos a adaptarnos a este béisbol”.

“El contrato de Rusney es impresionante, es un excelente jugador, y esa gran cifra que se le está pagando demuestra que el béisbol cubano es muy fuerte, que tiene mucha calidad”, agregó Gourriel en entrevista con The Associated Press en Tokio.

Castillo es sólo el más reciente pelotero cubano que firma un astronómico contrato en Estados Unidos. El acumulado de los desembolsos en los últimos cinco años por Abreu, Puig, Castillo, Céspedes, Aroldis Chapman y Jorge Soler roza los 278 millones de dólares.

Odrisamer Despaigne fue as de la rotación de Industriales y unos meses después de su deserción firmó un contrato de ligas menores por 1 millón de dólares con los Padres de San Diego. El derecho de 27 años fue llamado a Grandes Ligas en julio y el 20 de julio acarició la gloria en la victoria 2-1 de San Diego contra los Mets, al quedar a cuatro outs de convertirse en el primer lanzador de los Padres en lograr un juego sin hits en la historia de la franquicia y el primer cubano en conseguirlo en las mayores.

Mientras los peloteros cubanos brillan en Grandes Ligas, en la isla el béisbol no atraviesa por su mejor momento.

Cuba lleva 10 años sin ganar un título a nivel de selección, y tocó fondo en la última Serie del Caribe, a la que la isla regresó tras 54 años de ausencia. Villa Clara, el campeón nacional, cayó eliminado en la primera ronda con tres derrotas en cuatro partidos.

Fue la peor actuación en la Serie del Caribe de un equipo de Cuba, uno de los miembros fundadores del torneo en 1949, y que ganó siete de los 12 primeros títulos hasta 1960, año en que dejó de participar después que el gobierno de Fidel Castro prohibió el deporte profesional en la isla. Un año antes, en el Clásico Mundial de 2013, Cuba quedó eliminada en la segunda ronda, un resultado muy distante del que obtuvo en el primer Clásico (2005) cuando jugó la final que ganó Japón.

Para Lázaro Vargas, manager de Industriales, le urge al béisbol cubano “borrar la imagen negativa” dejada en la Serie del Caribe. El ex antesalista cree que para lograrlo, es importante que los peloteros de la isla puedan “salir y jugar a otro nivel. Vamos a elevar el techo de nuestra pelota y estaremos mejor preparados para torneos como la Serie del Caribe o el Clásico”.

“Nosotros jugamos años entre nosotros y no crecimos, mientras los países de la región sí se desarrollaron y ahora juegan una pelota superior a la nuestra. Ahora apenas empezamos, son pocos los jugadores que salieron, hay que darle tiempo para cosechar los frutos”, agregó el campeón olímpico de 1992.

A pesar de la nueva política del gobierno cubano, los peloteros de la isla no pueden jugar en ninguna de las ligas que pertenecen a la Confederación Caribeña de Béisbol, afiliada a Grandes Ligas y obligada a cumplir con el embargo de Estados Unidos contra la isla. Despaigne tuvo un paso por los Piratas de Campeche de la liga mexicana, pero tuvo que irse por haber sido contratado con un pasaporte falso. Los cubanos tampoco pueden jugar en Estados Unidos, a menos que deserten.

En Japón, Gourriel mostró la calidad de su bate, con promedio de .328 en sus primeros 47 partidos, mientras que Despaigne conectó .293 en sus primeros 36.

“Si algún equipo muestra interés estaría dispuesto a regresar (a Japón)”, comentó Gourriel, “pero tengo que venir mejor preparado, es una gran experiencia porque es otro béisbol, muy profesional, la manera de pensar es muy diferente, a la hora de batear se hace difícil, pero para mí fue de gran beneficio”.
