Carlos Prio was born in Bahía Honda, Cuba, July 14, 1903 and died in Miami, April 5, 1977, he was President of Cuba from 1948 through his party, the Partido Revolucionario Cubano Authentic until he was deposed by a military coup led by Fulgencio Batista the March 10, 1952, three months before new elections to be held. His rule was characterized by strong ties with the United States.
He was the son of Francisco Prío-Rivas and María de Regla Socarrás-Socarrás.
From 1945-1947 he held the post of Prime Minister. In 1948, he participated in the presidential elections in Cuba by his party, Authentic Cuban Revolutionary Party. Finally is winning with a large majority.
Presidency.
Following his election, was considered important enough to receive the greetings of US President Harry Truman. His presidency was marked by an increase in corruption and violence that existed between the different political factions.
Exile and death.
The government of Carlos Prio ended March 10, 1952 with the military coup of General Batista. Prio moved to the United States with his family without defending his government against coup.
Although he returned to Cuba on January 1, 1959, and thus seems to have been to Havana before Fidel Castro himself. However, Prio broke with Castro after the latter began to consolidate his power and his regime declared Marxist-Leninist government. Prio left the island in 1961 and returned to the United States.
He spent the last years of his life as a designer and businessman in Miami. Carlos Prio committed suicide on April 5, 1977.
