Rolando Sarraff Trujillo, el espía cubano pasado a la CIA que el Gobierno de Raúl Castro liberó el 17 de diciembre como parte de su histórico acuerdo con Barack Obama, acaba de reaparecer ante su familia a través de unas primeras y muy breves llamadas telefónicas desde Estados Unidos después de casi un mes sin noticias sobre su paradero y su estado. Así lo confirmaron esta tarde a La Vanguardia la hermana mayor del propio excarcelado, Vilma -residente en Cuenca-, y la que dijo ser su actual esposa en La Habana, Liana.
Rolando Saraff, conocido entre los suyos como Roly, dijo a sus familiares que “se encuentra perfectamente y le han tratado muy bien” desde que las autoridades de la isla aceptaron excarcelarle junto al contratista estadounidense Alan Gross -más 53 presos políticos liberados en los últimos días-, a cambio de que Washington dejara libres y enviara a Cuba a los tres espías castristas del grupo de los Cinco que aún estaban presos.
Roly, de 51 años, no reveló a su hermana y su mujer en qué lugar de Estados Unidos se encuentra; adujo que no podía hacerlo de momento, pero que estuvieran tranquilas y que pronto les daría más detalles.
Sarraff llevaba 19 años en prisión cuando Raúl Castro, en virtud del acuerdo bilateral de acercamiento y reanudación de las relaciones diplomáticas con Washington, lo puso en libertad a la par que al contratista Gross, quien por su parte acababa de cumplir cinco años en la cárcel por proporcionar equipos de telecomunicaciones a grupos calificados por el régimen de “disidentes”.
La Casa Blanca no llegó a confirmar oficialmente la identidad de Sarraff, liberado después de 19 años entre rejas desde que, en 1995, sus compañeros de la inteligencia cubana descubrieron supuestamente su “traición” y lo entregaron a la justicia, que le condenó a 25 años. Pero Washington sí consintió en diciembre pasado que miembros y ex miembros de la CIA filtraran a ciertos medios estadounidenses que Roly era el espía al que Obama se refirió -el mismo día del pacto con Raúl Castro- como “uno de los activos de inteligencia más importantes que EE.UU. haya tenido jamás en Cuba”.
En el momento de ser descubierto, Sarraff trabajaba bajo la cobertura de “periodista del Ministerio del Interior”. Tal como reconoció textualmente en una carta publicada en el blog gestionado por su hermana -bloqueado desde hace unos días-, su puesto real a los ojos de sus mandos en Cuba era el de “oficial de la Dirección General de la Inteligencia” de la isla.
Según fuentes de la Inteligencia de Defensa de Estados Unidos, Rolando pasó a la CIA información criptográfica que permitió descodificar comunicaciones entre la Seguridad cubana en La Habana y sus agentes en Norteamérica. Entre las víctimas de sus informes estarían la analista de la agencia citada Ana Belén Montes, encarcelada en EE.UU. desde 2002 por espiar para el Gobierno de los Castro, y los que el régimen de la isla llama los Cinco Héroes: espías cubanos que las autoridades estadounidense detuvieron no obstante en 1998 -tres años después que a Sarraff- y entre los cuales tres formaron parte esencial del canje del 17 de diciembre.
Roly telefoneó a su hermana Vilma en la tarde de este lunes. Antes llamó a la casa de sus padres en La Habana, Odesa y Rolando, pero no pudo hablar con ellos: el padre está ingresado en un hospital por neumonía. El excarcelado sí pudo hablar en cambio con su mujer, Liana, que vive con los suegros.
Liana, o Ely, de quien hasta ahora no se tenían noticias, atendió este martes a La Vanguardia. Explicó que ella y Roly -que tiene un hijo de un matrimonio anterior- se casaron hace tres años después de una relación obviamente complicada al estar él encerrado.
Ella lo había conocido a través de la que hoy es su suegra, Odesa, con la que tenía una relación de amistad. “Roly y yo empezamos a hablar por teléfono”, relató; después, ella fue a visitarlo a prisión cada vez que pudo, según indicó sin dar mayores detalles.
“¡Claro que estoy feliz!”, añadió Ely, que al igual que los padres y las hermanas del liberado -Vilma y Katia, ésta residente en Mallorca- esperan verle pronto.
