CUBA: U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE Met Today with Cardinal Ortega. ** CUBA: SE REUNIÓ HOY la Secretaria de Estado de EEUU con el Cardenal Jaime Ortega.United States Assistant Secretary of State for Latin America, Roberta Jacobson, met today in Havana with Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega, with whom he discussed the policy change announced by the government in Washington to Cuba.
Jacobson and Ortega also exchanged about the “important role” played by the Vatican in this process in previous secret contacts between Cuba and the US, according to a press release issued by the US State Department.
“The Secretary of State (Jacobson) valued the opportunity to hear the perspectives of Cardinal Ortega and the vision of other religious groups, on the situation of Cuba,” said the source.
Jacobson, the most senior US official to visit Cuba in decades, came to the island on Wednesday at the head of the delegation for the dialogue that began yesterday Washington and Havana to restore diplomatic relations after a diplomatic thaw announced by both Governments 17 last December.
During his stay in Havana, the US official met Wednesday with sectors of Cuban civil society and the Jewish community on the island and representatives of internal dissent.

CUBA: SE REUNIÓ HOY LA SECRETARIA DE ESTADO DE EEUU CON EL CARDENAL ORTEGA.
La secretaria de Estado adjunta para América Latina de Estados Unidos, Roberta Jacobson, se reunió hoy en La Habana con el cardenal cubano Jaime Ortega, con quien conversó sobre el cambio de política anunciado por el Gobierno de Washington hacia Cuba.
Jacobson y Ortega también intercambiaron acerca del “importante papel” que ha desempeñado el Vaticano en ese proceso en los contactos secretos previos entre Cuba y EEUU, indicó un comunicado de prensa divulgado por el Departamento de Estado norteamericano.
“La secretaria de Estado (Jacobson) valoró la oportunidad de escuchar las perspectivas del cardenal Ortega, así como la visión de otros grupos religiosos, sobre la situación de Cuba”, señaló la fuente.
Jacobson, la responsable estadounidense de mayor rango que visita Cuba en décadas, llegó a la isla el miércoles al frente de la delegación para el diálogo que ayer iniciaron Washington y La Habana para restablecer relaciones diplomáticas, tras el deshielo diplomático anunciado por ambos Gobiernos el 17 de diciembre pasado.
Durante su estancia en La Habana, la funcionaria norteamericana se reunió el miércoles con sectores de la sociedad civil cubana como la comunidad judía en la isla y representantes de la disidencia interna.
