PLANNING DIRECT Flights From Puerto Rico-Cuba this Summer. ** ESTUDIAN VUELOS Directos Puerto Rico-Cuba desde el Verano.A Puerto Rican tourist supply company has planned a dozen direct charter flights between Cuba and Puerto Rico from summer, an initiative that the government of this last island urged to imitate by other entrepreneurs.
“The company Turismo Tony Perez has a charter now in summer and is promoting something that I am very happy,” forward Efe Secretary of State of Puerto Rico, David Bernier, who said that despite the announcement of policy change in the approach to Cuba by the US, “the classic tourism between the two countries is not yet open”.
It still requires trips made between both countries-what also affects Puerto Rico and the Commonwealth reaching the US and Cuba meets one of the twelve categories established by Washington, including trips to cultural, educational or religious, among others.
“What has changed is that he explained before a license that was a bit cumbersome to obtain and can now be done directly required,” said Bernier.
He also said that “there are other airlines are also making their numbers to assess the feasibility of offering direct flights” among which are known locally as “sister islands”, but declined to provide details.

Una compañía turística puertorriqueña tiene planificada la oferta de una decena de vuelos chárter directos entre Cuba y Puerto Rico a partir de verano, una iniciativa que el Gobierno de esta última isla insta a imitar por parte de otros empresarios.
“La compañía Turismo Tony Pérez tiene un chárter ahora en verano y lo está promocionando, algo que me alegra mucho”, adelantó hoy a Efe el secretario de Estado de Puerto Rico, David Bernier, quien aclaró que, pese al anuncio de cambio de política en el acercamiento a Cuba por parte de EE.UU., “el turismo clásico entre ambos países aún no está abierto”.
Todavía se requiere que los viajes que se realicen entre ambos países -lo que afecta también a Puerto Rico como Estado Libre Asociado a EE.UU.- y Cuba responda a alguna de las doce categorías establecidas por Washington, que incluyen viajes de intereses culturales, educativos o religiosos, entre otros.
“Lo que ha cambiado -explicó- es que antes se requería una licencia que era un poco engorrosa de obtener y ahora se puede hacer directamente”, explicó Bernier.
Además, adelantó que “hay otras líneas aéreas que también están haciendo sus números para evaluar la viabilidad de ofrecer vuelos directos” entre las que se conocen localmente como “islas hermanas”, aunque no quiso ofrecer detalles.
En declaraciones a Efe posteriores a su intervención en un foro de la Cámara de Comercio de Puerto Rico, el número dos del Gobierno de Puerto Rico explicó que la oferta de vuelos directos es de gran interés para las autoridades puertorriqueñas, porque eso ayuda a estrechar lazos entre ambas islas.
Con ese mismo objetivo, anunció que se está tramitado la visita a Puerto Rico de funcionarios cubanos que expliquen al Gobierno y a empresarios locales cuál es su plan estratégico de crecimiento para los próximos años y, así, identificar áreas de negocio en las que desde aquí se pueda ayudar y, al mismo tiempo, sacar provecho del anuncio de Barack Obama y de Raúl Castro del pasado diciembre.
“Nos pareció más oportuno fijar una visita de funcionarios cubanos a Puerto Rico antes de organizar una misión comercial a Cuba”, explicó Bernier, que descartó que a corto plazo se esté planteando la apertura de una oficina comercial puertorriqueña el país vecino, tal y como se había especulado.
En ese mismo sentido, el presidente de la Cámara de Comercio, José Izquierdo, dijo hoy durante el citado foro que “la clase empresarial de la isla tiene que centrarse en identificar cómo ampliar la ‘tarta’ comercial a su alcance” y para ello abogó por estudiar las oportunidades que se abren en la vecina Cuba.
“Incluso los más optimistas se sorprendieron con un pronunciamiento tan categórico en un momento tan crítico” como el de Obama el pasado diciembre, dijo hoy Bernier a los empresarios allí reunidos.
Les anunció que el próximo 23 de febrero tendrá lugar una reunión del Comité Mixto de Acción para Cuba, integrado por once personas (seis del sector privado y cinco del público), para diseñar un plan de acción.
“Les animo a que empiecen a comerciar, aunque sean pequeñas cosas; que empiecen a plantear sus ideas y a cerrar negocios”, dijo Bernier, quien celebró que desde el días siguiente del citado anuncio su oficina ya empezó a recibir todo tipo de propuestas y consultas sobre cómo proceder par hacer negocios en Cuba.
En ese sentido, dijo que “nuestra actitud ya ha cambiado y las ideas han empezado realmente a florecer”, con “propuestas más efectivas, más reales”.
En su opinión, las mayores oportunidades están en el ámbito de las telecomunicaciones, los servicios financieros y de transacciones de pagos, la investigación y la manufactura farmacéuticas, los materiales de construcción y el sector de la alimentación.
