NEW CHALLENGE: “FERRY” KEY WEST- HAVANA, DRIVE YOUR OWN CAR IN CUBA .
In the opening scene of the movie ‘Havana’ Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford a sweaty anger of his life when robs looking at a card game a couple of Cuban police. The scene takes place on board the ferry for decades became an umbilical cord between Key West and Havana. It ended in the early 60s when relations between the two countries soured and that old symbol of communication is ‘buried’ in the Caribbean Sea.
But now, as in another movie, ‘Raise the Titanic’, the ferry service between the two cities is about to be refloated. As just happened this weekend with the resumption of direct telephone communications between the US and Cuba.
Today there is a new challenge with the recent opening of US-Havana relations. The next challenge, maritime connection. The ferry boat “Ferry” (Carrying automobiles) from Key West to Havana.
The other major challenge is the ‘ferry’ from Key West to Havana. The two countries have long been direct air links, an average of six daily flights arrive in Miami from the island, but they lack the maritime connection. And in pursuit of that business are various shipping companies willing to refloat the ferry business that would allow a Cuban living in South Florida get home from his relative on the island driving your own car.
One is ‘United Americas Shipping Services’ that 2010 applied for a permit the US government to open a route to Havana. He never received a reply. But now, as you said its director Joseph Hinson, it is time to insist. The plan is to open this year a route, with three or four trips per week, both Havana and other Cuban ports.
Another company that literally wants to address this ‘ship’ has been created on purpose. It’s called ‘CubaKat’ and intends to operate a catamaran ferry. A statement on their website indicates that you have already started negotiations with officials from the two countries to ‘make this adventure a reality’.
With the thaw seems it was time. Hinson says that Washington and Havana are flowing evidence that the proposal is being seriously considered and the ferry to Havana would soon refloated.
Anyway there are bureaucratic obstacles to face. On the Cuban side, only need government permission. But in America we must harmonize the legislation of three federal agencies, departments of Commerce and Treasury, and the ‘famous’ Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC, for its acronym in English) responsible for implementing the economic embargo on the island that has lasted half a century.
What input facilitates the resumption of these links, telephone and sea, is that the White House has centralized its policy of opening to the Cuban communist regime in expanding contacts between the two peoples. And nothing beats the phone, email or sea conditions.

NUEVO RETO: “FERRY” KEY WEST- HABANA, MANEJE SU PROPIO AUTOMÓVIL EN CUBA.
En la escena inicial de la película ‘Havana’ de Sidney Pollack, un sudoroso Robert Redford se busca la bronca de su vida cuando desvalija en un juego de cartas a un par de policías cubanos. La escena ocurre a bordo del ferry que durante décadas se transformó en un cordón umbilical entre Key West y La Habana. Todo terminó a inicios de los años 60 cuando las relaciones entre los dos países se agriaron y ese viejo símbolo de comunicación se ‘hundió’ en el mar Caribe.
Pero ahora, como en otra película, ‘Raise the Titanic’, el servicio de ferry entre las dos ciudades está a punto de ser reflotado. Tal como acaba de suceder este fin de semana con la reanudación de las comunicaciones telefónicas directas entre Estados Unidos y Cuba.
Hoy hay un nuevo reto con las reciente apertura de relaciones EEUU- Habana. El siguiente reto, conexión marítima. El barco transbordador “Kerry” de automobiles de Key West a la Habana.
El otro gran reto es el ‘ferry’ de Key West a La Habana. Los dos países disponen hace mucho de comunicaciones aéreas directas, un promedio de seis vuelos diarios llegan a Miami desde la isla, pero les falta la conexión marítima. Y en pos de ese negocio se encuentran varias empresas navieras dispuestas a reflotar el negocio del ferry que permitiría a un cubano residente en el sur de Florida llegar a casa de su pariente en la isla conduciendo su propio coche.
Una de ellas es ‘United Americas Shipping Services’ que el año 2010 solicitó un permiso al Gobierno estadounidense para abrir una ruta a La Habana. Jamás recibió una respuesta. Pero ahora, como ha dicho su director Joseph Hinson, ha llegado el momento de insistir. El plan es abrir este año una ruta, con tres o cuatro viajes semanales, tanto a La Habana como a otros puertos cubanos.
Otra empresa que, literalmente, quiere abordar este ‘barco’ ha sido creada a propósito. Se llama ‘CubaKat’ y pretende operar un ferry catamarán. Un comunicado en su página Web indica que ya ha comenzado las negociaciones con funcionarios de los dos países para ‘hacer de esta aventura una realidad’.
Con el deshielo parece que llegó el momento. Dice Hinson que desde Washington y La Habana le están llegando indicios de que la propuesta está siendo considerada seriamente y el ferry a La Habana seria pronto reflotado.
De todos modos hay obstáculos burocráticos que enfrentar. Por la parte cubana, solamente hace falta un permiso del Gobierno. Pero en Estados Unidos hay que armonizar la legislación de tres agencias federales, los departamentos de Comercio y Tesoro, y la ‘célebre’ Oficina de Control de Bienes Extranjeros, (OFAC, por sus siglas en inglés) encargada de aplicar el embargo económico a la isla que dura hace ya medio siglo.
Lo que de entrada facilita la reanudación de todos estos nexos, telefónicos y marítimos, es que la Casa Blanca ha centralizado su política de apertura hacia el régimen comunista cubano en la ampliación de los contactos entre los dos pueblos. Y nada mejor que el teléfono, un correo electrónico o un viaje marítimo.
