Los Orioles de Baltimore volverán este año a Cuba para jugar el primer partido de un equipo de las Grandes Ligas del béisbol estadounidense en la isla en más de 15 años, según anunció hoy un alto directivo del deporte cubano.
Los Orioles jugarán un partido con la selección nacional de la isla en 2015, en una fecha aún por determinar, dijo el presidente del Instituto Nacional del Deporte (INDER) cubano, Antonio Bacali, en declaraciones recogidas por la emisora Radio Habana Cuba, informó DPA.
Bacali aseguró también que hay más equipos de las Grandes Ligas que “tienen intención de topar este año con el béisbol cubano”. “Cuba está abierta para ese tipo de enfrentamientos con equipos de Grandes Ligas”, agregó el directivo.
Los Orioles, que se convirtieron en 1999 en el primer equipo estadounidense en jugar en Cuba tras la revolución de 1959, al parecer no llevarán sin embargo a su plantel principal, en el que juega también un desertor cubano, el jardinero Henry Urrutia.
El partido con los Orioles en La Habana “no puede ser con el equipo principal porque estarán inmersos en su temporada”, explicó Bacali. “Es casi seguro que venga un equipo de la sucursal”, agregó el directivo, que aseguró que la parte cubana mantiene un contacto fluido con el equipo estadounidense.
Bacali recordó también que los Orioles jugaron un partido “histórico” con la selección de Cuba en 1999, después de décadas sin que un equipo norteamericano visitara la isla, pese a la gran pasión que despierta el béisbol en el país antillano.
En la isla tampoco se suelen emitir en la televisión partidos de las Grandes Ligas norteamericanas, en las que juegan varios desertores cubanos.
Cuba desterró el deporte profesional en 1961 y no permitía hasta hace poco que sus atletas fueran fichados por clubes extranjeros. Varios peloteros han sido fichados en tanto por equipos de México y Japón después de que el gobierno de Raúl Castro abriera esa posibilidad.
Muchos deportistas cubanos desertaron en décadas pasadas sobre todo para asentarse en Estados Unidos, donde boxeadores o beisbolistas consiguen firmar contratos millonarios.
Urrutia abandonó su equipo un viaje oficial a Haití en 2011. El pelotero cubano de los Orioles celebró en diciembre del año pasado el histórico deshielo diplomático anunciado por Cuba y Estados Unidos.
“Estoy muy feliz de saber que algo está pasando, por fin”, dijo Urrutia entonces al diario “The Baltimore Sun”.
Desde el anuncio del acercamiento entre ambos viejos enemigos ideológicos, varios representantes del deporte estadounidense han viajado a Cuba o han anunciado su intención de hacerlo.
El New York Cosmos, equipo en que milita el futbolista español Raúl González, jugará el próximo 2 de junio un partido en La Habana.
