U.S. FOUNDATION WILL HELP SAVE HEMINGWAY’S LEGACY IN CUBA.
Ten miles east of Havana is Hemingway’s Cuba house – Finca Vigia, meaning “lookout house”. Finca Vigia is located in the small, working-class town of San Francisco de Paula near La Habana.
Built in 1886 by a Spanish Architect Miguel Pascual y Baguer, Finca Vigia was purchased by Hemingway in 1940 for a cost of $12,500. There, Hemingway wrote two of his most celebrated novels: ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ and ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. ‘A Movable Feast’ was written there as well.
A U.S. foundation will send about 1M. dollars in equipment to Cuba to build the first facility to preserve books, letters and photos of Ernest Hemingway.
The Finca Vigia Foundation, based in Boston, has been helping to Cuba to prevent thousands of pages of documents slowly disintegrate in the humidity and scorching heat of the home where he lived and worked the American writer on the outskirts of Havana between 1939 and 1960.
Officials of the National Council of Cultural Heritage of Cuba, which manages Finca La Vigia, have been enthusiastic about the idea of building a conservation laboratory, but did not have the funding to do so.
Architects, engineers and Cuban workers will use the material send by the U.S. Foundation and with cement blocks and mortar Cubans will build a laboratory of 223 square meters (2,400 square feet) where thousands of photos, about 9,000 books and a lot of letters and Hemingway , they may be treated and preserved.
“It will make a big difference,” Mary-Jo Adams, executive director of Finca Vigia Foundation, which operates privately funded and was founded in 2003. “They can be stored for decades, if not more,” he said.
The conductor of DIY programs on U.S. TV Bob Vila, a member of the board at Finca Vigia is Cuban-American and speaks fluent Spanish, will help oversee the project, Adams said.
