From his office on a high floor in Havana, Jeffrey DeLaurentis has a panoramic view of the blue waters of the Florida Straits and blood red letters proclaim the challenge of Cuba to the United States.
“Homeland or death!” Says the sign placed in front of the US Interests Section 15 years ago when DeLaurentis was a junior official who was trying to resolve the conflict around the rafter Elian Gonzalez.
Now in its third mission to socialist Cuba, DeLaurentis is the senior US diplomat on the island and its task is to work to end half a century of hostility between the two neighbors. Known for its low profile in public, DeLaurentis could be in the final list of candidates for US ambassador to Cuba, if there is such a thing. On Wednesday, DeLaurentis personally delivered a letter from the White House to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Havana about the reopening of embassies in the respective capitals. Their respective diplomatic missions, called interest sections, will be turned into embassies from July 20, although the US State Department said it does not have a date for a formal ceremony.
Cuba says the ceremony transformation of interest sections in embassies will be held on July 20.
Several Republicans in Congress have vowed to block the appointment of an ambassador to Havana and the allocation of funds to the embassy.
“Not many diplomats who could represent the United States in Havana in this sensitive stage but promising,” said the Cuban diplomat Carlos Alzugaray. “Jeff is one of them.”

“¡Patria o muerte!”, dice el cartel colocado frente a la Sección de Intereses de EU hace 15 años, cuando DeLaurentis era un funcionario de menor jerarquía que trataba de resolver el enfrentamiento en torno al niño balsero Elián González.
Ahora, en su tercera misión a la Cuba socialista, DeLaurentis es el diplomático estadounidense de mayor jerarquía en la isla y su tarea es colaborar para poner fin a más de medio siglo de hostilidad entre los dos países vecinos. Conocido por su presencia discreta en público, DeLaurentis podría estar en la lista final de postulados a embajador estadounidense en Cuba, si es que habrá tal cosa. El miércoles, DeLaurentis entregó personalmente una carta de la Casa Blanca al Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores en La Habana acerca de la reapertura de las embajadas en las respectivas capitales.
