Florida bank has signed the first agreement for a US banking institution with a Cuban from the beginning of the political thaw between Washington and Havana on December 17. The pact correspondent Stonegate Bank and the International Bank of Commerce (BICSA) was closed on Tuesday in Havana, a day after the United States and Cuba reestablished diplomatic relations and reopening embassies paths.
As you enter into force in three to four weeks, the agreement will directly manage payments and transactions between the two countries through their respective branches. It “will greatly facilitate the transaction of US companies doing business in Cuba,” said the president of Stonegate, David Seleski, according to local media.

It is “another step in the normalization of trade relations between the US and Cuba,” said Seleski. “The ability to move money between the two countries will increase trade and benefit US companies wanting to do business in Cuba,” he confided.
Banco Internacional de Comercio S.A., is a member of Grupo Nueva Banca S.A. and was created by Corporate Charter No. 49, of October 29, 1993.
The BICSA, founded in 1993, is devoted mainly to the “banking companies in the finance sector in foreign currency,” according to official information from Cuba. Stonegate, meanwhile, has 21 branches in Florida, home to many of the businesses facing the island. The Floridian bank was also key in the process of normalization of bilateral diplomatic relations, which in May agreed to perform banking operations of the then still Cuban Interests Section in Washington-from embajada- Monday that took more than a year without finding a bank to take their finances.
This, coupled with the departure of Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, State Department created the “proper context” in the words of the Cuban Government to reopen the embassy closed for 54 years.

El banco de Florida ha firmado el primer acuerdo de una institución bancaria estadounidense con una cubana desde el comienzo del deshielo político entre Washington y La Habana el 17 de diciembre. El pacto de corresponsalía entre el Stonegate Bank y el Banco Internacional de Comercio (BICSA) fue cerrado el martes en La Habana, un día después de que Estados Unidos y Cuba restablecieran relaciones diplomáticas y reabrieran sendas embajadas.
En cuanto entre en vigor, en tres o cuatro semanas, el acuerdo permitirá gestionar pagos y transacciones directamente entre los dos países a través de sus respectivas sucursales. Ello “facilitará mucho las transacciones de empresas estadounidenses que hacen negocios en Cuba”, dijo el presidente de Stonegate, David Seleski, según medios locales.
La negociación ha sido posible gracias a la flexibilización en enero -por orden del presidente Barack Obama- de parte de las restricciones comerciales que EE UU lleva más de medio siglo imponiendo a Cuba en el marco del embargo que pesa sobre la isla desde los años 60.
Se trata de “otro paso en la normalización de las relaciones comerciales entre EEUU y Cuba”, sostuvo Seleski. “La capacidad de mover dinero entre los dos países aumentará el comercio y beneficiará a las compañías estadounidenses que quieren hacer negocios en Cuba”, confió.

El BICSA, fundado en 1993, se dedica sobre todo a la “banca de empresas en el sector de las finanzas en divisas”, según información oficial de Cuba. Stonegate, por su parte, cuenta con 21 sucursales en Florida, sede de buena parte de los negocios que miran hacia la isla. El banco floridano fue además clave en el proceso de normalización de relaciones diplomáticas bilaterales, ya que en mayo accedió a realizar las operaciones bancarias de la entonces todavía Sección de Intereses cubana en Washington -desde el lunes embajada- que llevaba más de un año sin encontrar un banco que llevara sus finanzas.
Esto, junto con la salida de Cuba de la lista de Estados patrocinadores del terrorismo del Departamento de Estado creó el “contexto adecuado”, en palabras del Gobierno cubano, para reabrir las embajadas cerradas durante 54 años.
