Spanish companies have enthusiastically received the restoration of relations between the US and Cuba, interrupted 54 years ago. Obviously, if one takes into account that according to this year’s Institute of Foreign Trade of Spain (ICEX) operating in the Caribbean island 252 Spanish companies, a figure that is increasing.
Banco Popular will not stay off the hook and believes that now is the time to have a presence in Cuba. Las empresas españolas han recibido con entusiasmo el restablecimiento de las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y Cuba, interrumpidas hace 54 años. Lógico, si se tiene en cuenta que según datos de este mismo año del Instituto de Comercio Exterior de España (ICEX) operan en la isla caribeña 252 empresas españolas, cifra que va en aumento.
El Banco Popular no quiere quedarse descolgado y considera que ahora es el momento de tener presencia en Cuba. La apertura al comercio y a las relaciones internaciones del país caribeño han impulsado el interés de varias empresas españolas, entre ellas Popular, que ha solicitado la apertura de una oficina de representación en Cuba.
Popular así tiene prevista la compra en los próximos meses de un banco en EE UU, que duplique su tamaño en este país para llegar a sumar algo más de 4.000 millones de euros de activos en este país, donde ya tiene TotalBank. Se suma así a otros bancos españoles con presencia en esta isla del Caribe como BBVA, CaixaBank, Sabadell y Bankia.
Casi todas las cadenas hoteleras nacionales están presentes en Cuba. De los 17 operadores extranjeros que trabajan en la isla 13 son españoles. El pasado 30 de julio, el ministro de Comercio Exterior e Inversión Extranjera de Cuba, Rodrigo Malmierca, animó a los empresarios españoles a participar en los 246 proyectos que su Gobierno tiene en marcha en 11 sectores en todo el país, por un importe de 8.710 millones de dólares (7.950 millones de euros). Y la banca española no quiere ser ajena a este impulso del negocio español en Cuba, pese a que su presencia y actuación es sobre todo de asesoramiento, “pero hay que estar en Cuba. Ahora es el momento”, explica un directivo de una destacada entidad financiera.
.. BBVA abrió su oficina de representación en 1995. CaixaBank y Banco Sabadell también cuentan con presencia en esta isla. Fuentes financieras, de hecho, afirman que son dos de las entidades más activas en Cuba, aunque su labor se centra en asesorar a sus clientes españoles que invierten o quieren invertir en el estado caribeño.
Bankia es, sin embargo, el banco con una mayor presencia en Cuba. Cuenta con un banco cuya participación comparte con el Gobierno del país. Tiene el 60% de Corporación Financiera, mientras que el otro 40% está en manos del Gobierno. La posición financiera de Bankia en Cuba es una excepción en todos los sentidos, no solo porque es un banco que puede realizar casi todo tipo de operaciones financieras, sino también porque a diferencia de otras empresas mixtas instaladas allí, el Estado no tiene la mayoría de su capital.
Bankia heredó Corporación Financiera de la antigua Caja Madrid, entidad esta que logró alcanzar un acuerdo con el Gobierno cubano en 1998. Bankia, no obstante, tiene colgado el cartel de se vende en esta filial como ha ocurrido con todas sus participaciones por petición de Bruselas, tras recibir 22.424 millones de euros en ayudas públicas.Su venta, no obstante, es complicada al tener que buscar un socio que comparta el capital del banco cubano con el Gobierno del país. El proyecto pasa por vender esta filial a un consorcio formado por un inversor extranjero y un socio cubano.
