Durante más de dos décadas en las Naciones Unidas, el embargo comercial de Estados Unidos contra Cuba ha superado incluso a Israel en el concurso de la impopularidad en el organismo mundial, según publica el sitio The Times of Israel.
En 2014, al igual que el año anterior, 188 países votaron a favor de la resolución sobre la “necesidad de poner fin al bloqueo económico, comercial y financiero impuesto por los Estados Unidos de América contra Cuba”. Las Islas Marshall, Micronesia y Palau se abstuvieron. Sólo los EE.UU. e Israel se opusieron.
Pero menos de dos meses después de la última votación sobre el embargo, que tuvo lugar en la Asamblea General del año pasado, en octubre, el presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, reveló en un sorpresivo anuncio de que décadas de hostilidad entre su país y la isla socialista estaban terminando, allanando el camino para la liberación del contratista judío estadounidense Alan Gross, señala en un artículo el periodista Raphael Ahrem.
Sin embargo, Jerusalén no tendría fácil seguir el cambio de política, entre otras cosas porque La Habana no está interesada en relaciones con el Gobierno israelí, debido a sus lazos con el mundo árabe, Irán y otros países latinoamericanos críticos de las políticas del Estado judío hacia los palestinos.
El 14 de agosto, el secretario de Estado estadounidense, John Kerry, reabrió la embajada de Estados Unidos en La Habana. Israel fue cogido totalmente por sorpresa por el cambio de actitud de Estados Unidos, asegura Ahrem.
“Durante años, Jerusalén había seguido ciegamente el ejemplo de Washington sobre el régimen comunista de Cuba, teniendo en cuenta el respaldo incondicional de Estados Unidos a Israel en diversos foros internacionales.

Dada la sensibilidad del asunto, los funcionarios israelíes se niegan a comentar sobre el mismo, pero en conversaciones privadas no ocultan su frustración por la incómoda posición en que Washington les ha dejado y lo consideran una traición, asegura el diario de Israel.
