El «vuelo del reencuentro» entre Cuba y Estados Unidos tendrá como protagonista al Papa Francisco el próximo martes cuando Raúl Castro le despida en el aeropuerto de Santiago de Cuba y Barack Obama le reciba al pie de la escalerilla a su llegada a la base de Andrews en Washington. La primera dama, Michelle Obama, acudirá también a recibir a un Papa que revelará en este viaje su talla de estadista mundial en sendos discursos ante el Congreso americano y Naciones Unidas.
El Santo Padre será recibido este sábado en el aeropuerto de La Habana por el presidente Raúl Castro, quien le ha manifestado en público su admiración. Es posible que esa misma tarde reciba a Fidel, aunque esos encuentros nunca se anuncian de antemano.
El momento principal del viaje a la isla será la misa del domingo en la Plaza de la Revolución, donde ya la celebraron Juan Pablo II en 1998 y Benedicto XVI en 2012.
La diferencia es que esta vez el Papa habla español, y los cubanos le agradecen la reconciliación con Estados Unidos. Además, los viajes «estilo Francisco» incluyen encuentros de gran interés humano: con los jóvenes en La Habana, los vagabundos en Washington, los inmigrantes en Nueva York y los presos en Filadelfia.
Francisco desatará el entusiasmo no sólo en Cuba sino también en Estados Unidos. El miércoles 23, el Papa será recibido a primera hora en la Casa Blanca, donde pronunciará un discurso en inglés dirigido a todo el país y al mundo.
El jueves 24, el Papa latinoamericano será el primero en tomar la palabra ante las dos cámaras del Congreso de Estados Unidos reunidas en sesión conjunta, formato discurso del Estado de la Unión.
El viernes 25, el Papa tomará la palabra ante la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas, donde le escucharán más de sesenta jefes de Estado. El Santo Padre les espoleará a actuar más decisivamente en favor de los refugiados, de los pobres y del recorte de emisiones de anhídrido carbónico para mitigar en lo posible un calentamiento global que hace ya notar sus desastrosos efectos.
El sábado 26 y el domingo 27 son los días de Filadelfia, que incluyen una visita a la cárcel pero, sobre todo, el Encuentro Mundial de las Familias. El Papa hablará de libertad religiosa en el histórico Independence Mall de Filadelfia, utilizando el atril del presidente Abraham Lincoln en su famoso discurso de Gettysburg.
