WHO IS JAIME ORTEGA ALAMINO..?
Who’s Jaime Ortega, the highest authority of the Catholic Church in Cuba who received pope Francisco, with Raul Castro at the Havana airport ?.
In the past 17 years, Cardinal Ortega has lived the historic visit of John Paul II in 1998, and Benedict XVI, in 2012, who traveled to the island as “Messenger of Truth” and “Pilgrim Virgin Charity “respectively.
The visit of Francisco occurs when the Cuban prelate, 78, 51 accumulates priesthood, 35 as bishop and 20 as the only Cardinal with which Cuba has in Vatican.
.. Following the announcement on 17 December 2014 that Cuba and the United States had decided to end 54 years of hostility, it was learned that the secret talks that continued for 18 months had the support of the Vatican diplomacy and the pope, and also in collaboration with Ortega.
His life
Born October 18, 1936 in the town of Jaguey Grande, Matanzas, he studied theology at the seminary of San Alberto Magno, in that province and in the seminary of priests of the Foreign Missions of Quebec, Canada.
Ordained a priest on August 2, 1964, the ministry of young Ortega was interrupted a year after being admitted to one of the labor camps of calls Military Units to Aid Production (UMAP) that the Cuban Government maintained until 1968 where they were held mainly young people who refused to fulfill compulsory military service.
In December 1978, Ortega was appointed Bishop of Pinar del Río and from November 20, 1981 archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Cristobal de La Habana.
Cardinal chaired the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba, from 1988 to 1999, and has participated in two conclaves, in which they are elected Pope in 2005, and Francisco in 2013.
In 2011, the pope called for his resignation as archbishop of Havana, on reaching 75, the mandatory age established by canon law, but it was not accepted.
In the Curia part of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, he is author of “My grace is sufficient” doctor “honoris causa” of various universities and received the Order of Isabella the Catholic which he granted the Government of Spain in 2011.

Quién es Jaime Ortega, la máxima autoridad de la Iglesia Católica en Cuba que recibió al Papa Francisco, junto a Raul Castro en el aeropuerto de la Habana.
En los últimos 17 años, el cardenal Ortega ha vivido la histórica visita de Juan Pablo II, en 1998, y la de Benedicto XVI, en 2012, quienes viajaron a la isla como “Mensajero de la Verdad” y “Peregrino de la Virgen de la Caridad” respectivamente.
La visita de Francisco se produce cuando el prelado cubano, de 78 años, acumula ya 51 de sacerdocio, 35 como obispo y 20 desde que se convirtió en el único cardenal con el que cuenta Cuba en el Vaticano.

Tras el anuncio el 17 de diciembre de 2014 de que Cuba y Estados Unidos habían decidido poner fin a 54 años de enemistad, se conoció que las conversaciones secretas que mantuvieron durante 18 meses contaron con el apoyo de la diplomacia Vaticana y el papa, y también con la colaboración de Ortega.
Su vida
Nacido el 18 de octubre de 1936 en la localidad de Jagüey Grande, Matanzas, estudió teología en el seminario de San Alberto Magno, de esa provincia y en el seminario de Sacerdotes de las Misiones Extranjeras de Québec, en Canadá.
Ordenado sacerdote el 2 de agosto de 1964, el ministerio del joven Ortega se vio interrumpido un año después al ser internado en uno de los campos de trabajo de las llamadas Unidades Militares de Ayuda a la Producción (UMAP) que el Gobierno cubano mantuvo hasta 1968, donde eran recluidos básicamente jóvenes que se negaban a cumplir el Servicio Militar Obligatorio.
En diciembre de 1978, Ortega fue designado obispo de Pinar del Río y desde el 20 de noviembre de 1981 es arzobispo de la Archidiócesis de San Cristóbal de La Habana.
El cardenal presidió la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Cuba, de 1988 a 1999, y ha participado en dos cónclaves, en los que se eligieron a Benedicto XVI, en 2005, y a Francisco, en 2013.
En 2011, pidió su renuncia al papa como arzobispo de La Habana, al cumplir 75 años, la edad preceptiva que establece la legislación canónica, pero no le fue aceptada.
En la Curia forma parte de la Congregación para la Evangelización de los Pueblos y del Pontificio Consejo para las Comunicaciones Sociales, es autor del libro “Te basta mi gracia”, doctor “honoris causa” por varias universidades y recibió la Orden de Isabel la Católica, que le concedió el Gobierno de España en 2011.
