En las provincias de Santiago de Cuba y Guantánamo se instalarán 40 acelerógrafos y cinco estaciones sísmicas, como parte de un proyecto internacional con fondos de la Oficina de Ayuda Humanitaria y Protección Civil de la Comisión Europea. El Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Sismológicas está encargado de liderar la iniciativa por la parte cubana, según informó este viernes el periódico Juventud Rebelde.

Bajo el lema “Ciudades preparadas y alertas ante el riesgo sísmico en el Oriente cubano”, la instalación de estos instrumentos para registrar las oscilaciones del suelo en tiempo real incrementará la capacidad de responder ante cualquier evento sísmico. A través de ellos, se podrá obtener información sobre los movimientos producidos por temblores fuertes o con epicentros cercanos.
Un objetivo prioritario es precisar la resistencia de las edificaciones ante estas contingencias, explicaron expertos del Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente (Citma). Elizabeth Álvarez Cambas, directora del Centro de Información y Gestión Tecnológica (Ciget), detalló que la red contará con cinco nuevas estaciones sismológicas y un sistema de “aviso en tiempo real” que se instalarán en lugares acordados por el Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Sismológicas (Cenais) y la Defensa Civil.
La capacitación de los actores para la gestión del riesgo sísmico se incluye en la agenda de este proyecto, que ha contado con contribuciones financieras también de las organizaciones CARE, de Francia, y la belga Oxfam.
