Jugaba pelota desde los seis años y ahora es el centro de los rumores entre los seguidores del béisbol en Cuba. Esta semana se confirmó que el jardinero Yasser Julio González Castro (1992) ha abandonado la Isla, una pérdida que hunde aún más a su equipo de Pinar del Río y le da un puntillazo mortal a la desteñida serie nacional.
Habanero de origen, pero con familia en la localidad pinareña de Mantua, González Castro pasó con éxito por todas las categorías del béisbol nacional. En la Serie 51, hizo equipo con los Metropolitanos antes de que el equipo desapareciera y después se radicó en Pinar del Río para unirse a los Vegueros, una escuadra con la que participó en las series 53 y 54 como jugador de cambio.
Su excelente actuación en la segunda Serie Nacional Sub-23 le abrió de par en par las puertas en la nómina regular del Tsunami pinareño y no decepcionó. El nombre de González Castro saltó a la palestra pública por el descontento popular al no verlo incluido entre los peloteros que participaron en el torneo Premier 12. Tiempo después, quedaría claro que los planes del toletero habanero iban mucho más allá de ese torneo.
La partida de Yasser Julio hunde aún más a su equipo de Pinar del Río y le da un puntillazo mortal a la desteñida serie nacional. La salida del jardinero, con el propósito de jugar en las Grandes Ligas, fue confirmada a este diario por su esposa, Clensi Porras García. La mujer brindó detalles sobre la decisión de González Castro al término del juego entre Pinar del Río y Ciego de Ávila, el pasado jueves en el Estadio Capitán San Luis de la capital vueltabajera.
La joven de 19 años fue al estadio para compartir con los compañeros de equipo de su esposo y decirles que Yasser Julio se encuentra en buen estado de salud y con muchas esperanzas de llevar a buen término sus planes. “Les he dicho que está bien y que les manda saludos”, comentó Porras García a 14ymedio. “Anoche me llamó y me pidió que se los dijera y eso es lo que he hecho”, agregó.
Al indagar sobre las razones que lo llevaron a salir del país, la joven ratificó el deseo de su esposo de “jugar en Grandes Ligas”, aunque agregó que “no se sentía valorado, no aquí en Pinar, sino con todo lo que pasó alrededor del Premier. Aunque nunca lo dijo en público, estaba molesto por eso”.
Según Porras García, para su esposo el equipo pinareño y sus colegas “eran todo, y él estaba agradecido porque le dieron la oportunidad de jugar y confiaron en él”. Sin embargo “aspiraba a más y aquí, en Cuba, no lo iba a conseguir, es lo que me ha dicho en estos días cuando me llamó”, cuenta, visiblemente emocionada.
Yasser Julio, al momento de su partida, jugaba para el equipo de Pinar del Río y en la actual temporada bateó para 292, su slugging era de 533, con 137 veces al bate, 34 carreras impulsadas y 10 jonrones.

En un breve intercambio con el otrora estelar lanzador vueltabajero Pedro Luis Lazo, éste comentó a 14ymedio que “el muchacho tiene condiciones, tiene que pulir varias deficiencias pero es joven y eso es lo primordial”.
En respuesta a las especulaciones sobre el lugar donde se encuentra el pelotero cubano, su esposa asegura que “de verdad” no sabe dónde está. Aunque “amistades nuestras me han dicho que está en República Dominicana, junto a otros peloteros cubanos”, explica entre lágrimas. “Sea lo que sea, yo lo apoyo; ese era su sueño y espero que pueda cumplirlo”.
Una parte de la fanaticada en Pinar ya no se asombra que estos hechos ocurran y ve la salida de deportistas como parte de un problema mayor. “El deporte se ve afectado también por la grave situación, insostenible, por la que pasan todos los cubanos”, opina Noel Nodarse, un apasionado del béisbol.
Mientras pedalea y suda de lo lindo encima de su bicitaxi que lo lleva y lo trae por toda la ciudad, Pedro Luis Sabat escucha la pelota en una pequeña radio de baterías. “El país se quedará sin peloteros”, sentencia, “porque no quieren pagarles lo que deben a los deportistas”.
Por lo pronto, Yasser Julio comienza una nueva etapa en la “Grande”, como le llaman en Cuba a la Major League Baseball, y los fanáticos hacen sus pronósticos sobre quién será el próximo pelotero cubano en decir adiós.
