The Brazilian group Odebrecht expand its presence in Cuba with two contracts in the sugar industry and civil aviation, said Tuesday the agency Prensa Latina. On January 13, the company also received authorization to operate in the Special Area Development Mariel (ZEDM) over the next 15 years to provide engineering and construction services to potential foreign investors through its Companhia Works and Infrastructure (COI).
A representative of Odebrecht, Mauro Augusto Hueb, told Prensa Latina that the business potential is enormous and IOC is studying the possibility of asking the Cuban authorities other permission to invest in a plant producing plastic packaging located in Mariel.

El grupo brasileño Odebrecht ampliará su presencia en Cuba con dos contratos en el sector azucarero y en la aeronáutica civil, según informó este martes la agencia Prensa Latina. El pasado 13 de enero, la empresa recibió también la autorización para operar en la Zona Especial de Desarrollo Mariel (ZEDM) durante los próximos 15 años para ofrecer servicios de ingeniería y construcción a los potenciales inversionistas extranjeros a través de su Companhia de Obras e Infraestructura (COI).
Un representante de Odebrecht, Mauro Augusto Hueb, aseguró a Prensa Latina que las potencialidades de negocios son enormes y que COI está estudiando la posibilidad de solicitar a las autoridades cubanas otro permiso para invertir en una planta productora de envases y embalajes plásticos ubicada en Mariel.
La compañía brasileña ha firmado un contrato de administración productiva con el grupo cubano Azcuba para el central azucarero 5 de Septiembre, en Cienfuegos. “Nuestra labor incluirá la estructuración del crédito, la modernización de la planta, la mejora de la parte agrícola y la administración del central, con garantía de máxima generación eléctrica a partir del bagazo de la caña”, explicó Hueb. El representante aseguró que la primera acción será aumentar las plantaciones y la eficiencia por hectárea.
La empresa estudia la posibilidad de solicitar otro permiso para invertir en una planta productora de envases y embalajes plásticos en Mariel.
Hueb alabó el “alto nivel cultural, sentido de la disciplina y una facilidad de aprender impresionante” del trabajador cubano y afirmó que en la Isla su empresa encontró “un gran potencial de permanencia y perpetuidad”.
En Cuba, Odebrecht construyó la terminal de contenedores del Puerto de Mariel, una obra de 1.000 millones de dólares, la mayor parte provenientes de créditos del Gobierno brasileño. Su Companhia de Obras e Infraestructura está encargada de la modernización y la ampliación de la terminal número tres del Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí, en La Habana. El grupo prevé que la nueva instalación será operativa en un plazo de dos años y que “duplicará la capacidad del aeropuerto para dar respuesta al incremento del turismo internacional”.
El empresario está convencido de que el país ofrece “seguridad a los inversionistas”. “Cuando vinimos por primera vez, nos llamó mucho la atención que los lineamientos económicos aprobados por el Gobierno surgieron de un trabajo conjunto con la población. (…) Existe una visión clara del rumbo que quiere seguir Cuba para construir su desarrollo y ello ofrece seguridad a los inversionistas”, agregó.
La nueva terminal del aeropuerto de La Habana “duplicará la capacidad del aeropuerto para dar respuesta al incremento del turismo internacional”.
Hueb reconoció que muchos extranjeros que llegan a la Isla manifiestan preocupaciones a la hora de invertir. “Siempre que tengo la oportunidad, les comento mi experiencia en la ejecución de la terminal de contenedores de Mariel: por ahí pasaron unos 6.000 cubanos, y para nosotros la empresa empleadora nunca fue un obstáculo, su intervención resultó viable, beneficiosa, económica y eficiente”, dijo.
Odebrecht está siendo investigada en Brasil junto a otras 26 firmas por su supuesta participación en una red de corrupción enquistada en Petrobras que, durante la última década, según admitió la propia petrolera, se apropió ilegalmente de unos 2.000 millones de dólares. El presidente del grupo, Marcelo Odebrecht, fue detenido el pasado mes de junio en el marco de las investigaciones, acusado de fraude en licitaciones y formación de cartel.
