LA HAVANA GETTING READY TO RECEIVE TO OBAMA AND “THE ROLLING STONES”.
Hundreds of workers are mobilized for several days to paint facades of buildings, unpaved streets and beautify monuments in Havana, which wants to show its pretty face during the historic visit of President Barack Obama next week.
The Rolling Stones will give their first concert on March 25 in Havana.
Some of the main avenues of the capital were paved, including the Malecon, the famous promenade surrounding the US embassy.
On the same Malecón, multiple facades were repainted, hiding just ruined buildings adjacent streets leading to the first line of the sea, which circulate Obama, the first sitting president of the United States to visit the island in nearly half century.
In other imperfections they were corrected routes and road signs were updated, especially at the entrances to Old Havana, where marriage Obama plans a walk as usual when a head of state visiting the Cuban capital.
“Sounds good, but would prefer to do so more often,” jokes the taxi driver Pedro, 50, conjuring up the holes in the streets of the capital, which, with a touch of humor, Cubans say form part of “heritage national”.
At the heart of the historic center, the emblematic Capitol (old parliament) has been completely renovated and its surroundings are undergoing major rehabilitation works.
In the neighborhood of Cerro (South Central), the Latin American Stadium which will host a historic match between Tampa Bay Rays and the national team of Cuba within the framework of the visit, it was also remodeled for the occasion.
New press boxes, roof repair and a new field: everything should be ready for this match scheduled for Tuesday and that Obama would throw the first ball.
“Everything is ready (…) for the big day we all hope,” said Alejandro Gomez, an employee of the stadium, considered the temple of Cuban baseball.
Across the city, the street leading to the residence of US ambassador also received benefits, since there spend the night the American couple.
For some 2,000 journalists expected this weekend in Havana, Cuban authorities are setting up a press room with the necessary equipment at the Habana Libre hotel, in the city center.
The only problem is that US authorities may not offer it their usual “briefings” for the former Havana Hilton, nationalized without compensation after the revolution of 1959, is a “forbidden zone” by the laws of Washington.
Other major hotels in the capital, including the National, Cohiba or Central Park, were partially or fully reserved for hosting delegations from 19 to 23 March.
However, the order came late, when the tourist season is still in full swing.
Industry officials told AFP that some clients who refused to be relocated to other facilities in Havana, could be transferred at the last minute to the resort of Varadero, 140 km east of the capital hotels.
In the Sports City in the Cerro, other works are underway, because after Obama’s visit, he will touch the Rolling Stones stamp his mark on the history of the island.
For the concert an impressive logistics and no less than 62 containers were dedicated to be installed in the outdoor sports stage 80 meters long by 56 wide unfolded.
Ten giant screens will be placed around the compound, something never seen in Cuba.

Cientos de obreros se movilizan desde hace varios días para pintar fachadas de edificios, asfaltar calles y embellecer monumentos en La Habana, que quiere mostrar su cara más bonita durante la visita histórica del presidente Barack Obama la próxima semana.
Los Rolling Stones ofrecerán su primer concierto el 25 de marzo en La Habana.
Algunas de las principales avenidas de la capital fueron pavimentadas, entre ellas el Malecón, la famosa costanera que rodea la embajada de Estados Unidos.
Sobre el mismo Malecón, múltiples fachadas fueron repintadas, disimulando apenas los edificios en ruinas de las calles adyacentes que desembocan en la primera línea del mar, por la cual circulará Obama, el primer presidente en funciones de Estados Unidos que visita la isla en casi medio siglo.
En otras rutas se corrigieron imperfecciones y se actualizaron señales viales, especialmente en los accesos a La Habana Vieja, donde el matrimonio Obama planea un paseo como es habitual cuando un jefe de Estado visita la capital cubana.
“Me parece bien, pero preferiría que lo hicieran más a menudo”, bromea el taxista Pedro, de 50 años, evocando los huecos de las calles de la capital, que, con un toque de humor, los cubanos aseguran forman parte del “patrimonio nacional”.
En el corazón del centro histórico, el emblemático Capitolio (antiguo parlamento) ha sido completamente renovado y sus alrededores son objeto de importantes obras de rehabilitación.
En el barrio del Cerro (centro-sur), el Estadio Latinoamericano que acogerá un histórico partido entre el Tampa Bay Rays y el equipo nacional de Cuba en el marco de la visita, también fue remodelado para la ocasión.
Nuevas cabinas de prensa, reparación de techos y un césped nuevo: todo deberá estar listo para este partido programado para el martes y en el que Obama lanzaría la primera bola.
“Todo está listo (…) para el gran día que todos esperamos”, dijo Alejandro Gómez, un empleado del estadio, considerado el templo del béisbol cubano.
Del otro lado de la ciudad, la calle que conduce a la residencia del embajador de Estados Unidos también recibió beneficios, toda vez que allí pernoctará la pareja estadounidense.
Para unos 2.000 periodistas esperados este fin de semana en La Habana, las autoridades cubanas están instalando una gran sala de prensa con el equipamiento necesario en el hotel Habana Libre, en el centro de la ciudad.
El único problema es que las autoridades estadounidenses no podrán ofrecer en ella sus habituales “briefings”, pues el antiguo Habana Hilton, nacionalizado sin compensación tras la revolución de 1959, es una “zona prohibida” por las leyes de Washington.
Otros importantes hoteles de la capital, como el Nacional, Cohiba o Parque Central, fueron reservados parcial o totalmente para hospedar a las delegaciones del 19 al 23 marzo.
Sin embargo, la orden llegó tarde, cuando la temporada alta turística todavía está en plena actividad.
Funcionarios del sector dijeron a la AFP que algunos clientes que rechazaron ser reubicados en otras instalaciones de La Habana, podrían ser transferidos a última hora a hoteles del balneario de Varadero, 140 km al este de la capital.

En la Ciudad Deportiva, en el Cerro, otras obras están en marcha, porque después de la visita de Obama, les tocará a los Rolling Stones estampar su huella en la historia de la isla.
Para el concierto se desplegó una impresionante logística y no menos de 62 contenedores fueron dedicados a instalar en ese polideportivo al aire libre un escenario de 80 metros de largo por 56 de ancho.
Diez pantallas gigantes serán colocadas alrededor del recinto, algo nunca visto en Cuba.
“Quiero ir, pero habrá mucha agitación. Voy a ver si encuentro la fuerza para ir con mi familia”, dijo Pedro, fanático del rock, género que estuvo prohibido en la isla durante largo tiempo.
