En Cuba están elaborando un medicamento que podría ayudar a los médicos a luchar contra el cáncer. Se trata del Vidatox, una sustancia que reduce los efectos de la enfermedad y algunos aseguran que podría tener efectos antitumorales. La historia del Vidatox comienza en los campos cubanos. Su principal componente es el veneno del Rhopalurus Junceus, un escorpión endémico de Cuba.
En Cuba según fuentes medicas miles de cubanos que han superado las consecuencias del cáncer gracias al tratamiento con el fármaco Vidatox. El actor cubano Jorge Martínez hace tres años tuvo que poner fin a su carrera, porque un cáncer en el pulmón izquierdo lo puso al borde de la muerte. Tras una difícil operación, hoy luce saludable gracias a un fármaco que reciben los pacientes cubanos durante el tratamiento posterior.
“Yo cada vez me siento mejor, en el sentido, de que casi he llevado una vida normal. Claro, con las limitaciones que tiene tener un solo pulmón”, confiesa Martínez a RT.
La doctora María Isabel Bermúdez ha comentado que el fármaco tiene propiedades analgésicas y antiinflamatorias. “El medicamento mejora la calidad de vida del paciente, regula el sistema inmunológico del paciente, de forma tal que estos pacientes que se han sometido a operaciones importantes y a tratamientos agresivos (quimioterapia y radioterapia), que están debilitados por la propia enfermedad de base, logran mejorar su calidad de vida”, ha resumido la médica.
El tratamiento que requieren los escorpiones Rhopalurus Junceus es una tarea difícil. Primero entran en una etapa de cuarentena y posteriormente a un salón de cría donde son recibidos por un grupo de técnicos. Un gran esfuerzo para solo lograr una o dos gotas de veneno al mes. En casi todas las provincias del país hay un centro dedicado a la cría en cautiverio de este pequeño, pero valioso animal.
“Un ejemplar debe tener buen tamaño, ya eso se clasifica en cuarentena, ya cuando llega aquí viene con el tamaño que lleva. Si está la hembra parida o no también está señalado, pues no puede ordeñarse”, explicó a RT el técnico del escorpionario Duniesky Rodríguez Baldín.
La caza de los escorpiones es un proceso que debe hacerse con extremo cuidado. Según estos especialistas, un mal procedimiento pondría en peligro a la población de esta especie. Tras ser capturados y pasar meses en el escorpionario, cada uno de estos animales es devuelto a su medio natural.
Hoy los científicos estudian los efectos reales del veneno de alacrán sobre las enfermedades cancerígenas, que son la segunda causa de muerte en la Isla. No obstante, ya uno de los productos elaborados a partir de esa sustancia ha devuelto el bienestar a miles de cubanos que sobreviven a esta terrible enfermedad.
