UNA BREVE HISTORIA DE FIDEL CASTRO Y MIRTA DÍAZ-BALART, SU PRIMERA ESPOSA.

Hay veces que la realidad supera a la ficción, y un buen ejemplo es la existencia de Mirtha Díaz Balart. Una mujer marcada por una encrucijada política y sentimental que le ha perseguido durante la mayor parte de sus 86 años. Por un lado, Fidel Castro, el hombre que la marcó para siempre. Fue su amor de juventud, su primer marido y padre de su único hijo varón, Fidelito, al que adora. Por el otro, su segundo esposo, Emilio Núñez Blanco, fiel compañero de casi 40 años de exilio en Madrid, padre de sus hijas, Mirta y Meki, pero ferviente anti castrista murió hace ya varios años en España.

LA BELLA Y EL LIDER.

Este Romeo y Julieta ambientado en la Revolución cubana se inició en la universidad, donde Mirtha estudiaba Filosofía y Letras, y Fidel Castro se preparaba para ser abogado. El apuesto líder de izquierdas estudiantil, hijo de un campesino dedicado al ganado y a la caña, se enamoró de esta belleza de clase alta, hermana del que sería Subsecretario de Gobernación con Batista, Rafael Díaz Balart.

El 12 de octubre de 1948, Fidel Castro se casó con Mirta Díaz Balart de Núñez, estudiante de la Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad de La Habana. Castro estaba entonces en las últimas etapas de la escuela de derecho; Mirtha era natural de Banes, la hija de un general, y su hermano se convertiría en uno de los oficiales de Batista. Se casaron en una iglesia católica romana en la provincia de Oriente, no muy lejos del lugar de nacimiento de Castro. En su luna de miel en Miami, Florida, Fidel se vio obligado a empeñar su reloj y otros objetos de valor. La versión que circula en Cuba es que no fue casualidad, sino una venganza del director del penal contra Fidel.

Tras divorciarse del líder cubano en 1955, Mirtha se unió sentimentalmente a Emilio Núñez Blanco, apodado ‘Milio’, casándose un año después.Era notario, hijo del embajador cubano en la ONU, Emilio Núñez Portuondo, y oponente acérrimo de Castro. Éste, exiliado entonces en México, donde preparaba el golpe contra Batista, montó en cólera al saber que Mirtha se había unido a un enemigo político, y su hijo Fidelito se educaría con un batistiano. Así que, bajo el engaño de que quería despedirse de su hijo por si moría en el asalto al poder, hizo que Mirtha se lo enviara a México, donde le retuvo por la fuerza. Ella y Núñez Blanco liberaron en México al niño, con ayuda de la Policía del país sudamericano.

Cuando en el 59 Fidel Castro llegó al poder, Mirtha y su esposo permanecieron algunos años en Cuba. Pero, según ha reconocido su hermano Emilio, desarrollaba en la clandestinidad actividades contra el régimen. «Salvó de la cárcel a muchas personas buscadas por la justicia revolucionaria, procurándoles asilo en embajadas extranjeras. Por esta razón llegó a ser detenido por el G-2.Sin embargo, se mantuvo en la patria hasta que Fidelito, su hijastro, fue enviado a la Universidad de Moscú para cursar sus estudios».

Fue entonces cuando el matrimonio decidió instalarse definitivamente en Madrid. Además de estar más cerca de su hijo, la ausencia de Fidelito, al fin y al cabo un «escudo protector» contra Castro podía complicarle la vida a Emilio Núñez.

A mediados de la década de los 70 la pareja se afinca en la capital de España. Emilio abandonó la abogacía para dedicarse a los negocios. Y a la vez empezó a colaborar en varios diarios de Miami. De esta forma hizo amistad con corresponsales de medios iberoamericanos, como Tito Drago, presidente del Club Internacional de Prensa, o Hugo Ferrer, presidente de la Asociación de Corresponsales Iberoamericanos. En esta última entidad desempeñó los cargos de tesorero y secretario general durante 15 años.

Según relata a este suplemento Armando Restrepo, periodista colombiano afincado en España y amigo de la pareja, «parecía un matrimonio normal. Mirtha tenía buen porte y trato amable. Emilio publicaba artículos en periódicos de Miami, donde se desvelaba como un radical anticastrista. Aunque había una cosa que me chocaba: jamás hacían referencia a su pasado en la isla».

Mirtha vivía con la obsesión permanente de que nadie descubriera su identidad como primera esposa de Castro. Por eso limitaba su vida social y evitaba que la fotografiaran. Hay quien llegó a decir incluso que se hizo la cirugía estética para que no la reconocieran. En palabras de un miembro de su círculo íntimo de amistades, «ella jamás habló mal de Fidel Castro. Ni bien, tampoco. Es que jamás habló. Incluso para los que conocíamos su pasado, era el innombrable. Pienso que quería borrar esa página de su historia, aunque la había marcado totalmente».

Lo corrobora Restrepo, a quien un día, durante un cóctel, Emilio Núñez desveló su gran secreto: «Le pregunté por qué no se habían instalado en Miami, donde vivía la mayoría de los anticastristas exiliados. Recuerdo que me respondió con gran misterio: ‘en Miami tampoco estaríamos seguros’. Y casi en un susurro, añadió: ‘mi mujer, Mirtha, estuvo casada con Castro y es la madre de Fidelito, el primogénito del dictador’. Me quedé de piedra», asegura Restrepo.

Mirtha, en Madrid, no se sentía sola, pues aquí residían dos de sus hermanos. Waldo era pintor y tenía un estudio en la capital.También Rafael, que fue Subsecretario de la Gobernación con Batista, y vivía a caballo entre Miami y Madrid. Se había casado en segundas nupcias con una viuda española, Mercedes Romay, apodada Chelas. Era hermana del que fue hombre de confianza de Manuel Fraga y ministro de Sanidad de Aznar, José Manuel Romay Becaria.

Rafael Díaz Balart atesoraba una gran fortuna, labrada gracias a sus excelentes contactos en Arabia Saudí y a su amistad con el dictador africano Mobutu Seseseco. Aunque su obsesión era ver fuera del poder a Fidel, sueño que no pudo cumplir, pues murió en 2005 de una leucemia. Un odio correspondido, ya que el mandatario cubano juró matar a su ex cuñado con sus propias manos. Por esta razón, Díaz Balart llevaba siempre pistola.

FIDEL CASTRO DIAZ-BALART Y SUS OTRAS HERMANAS.

Fidelito, buen alumno, estudió en la Universidad de Moscú la carrera de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas. Allí pocos conocían su identidad, ni siquiera muchos de sus amigos y compañeros de aula, ya que usaba el seudónimo de José Raúl Fernández. Se graduó cum laude en Física Nuclear y se casó con una soviética, Olga Smirnova, madre de sus hijos Fidel III y Mirtha, que estudió la misma carrera de su padre.

Pero la experiencia matrimonial del primogénito de Castro no termina ahí. Se casó por segunda vez con una cubana, Victoria Barreiro, hija de un general responsable del servicio de inteligencia cubano.

Fidelito ha desempeñado en Cuba cargos importantes: en 1980 fue nombrado responsable de la Comisión de Energía Atómica y de la Secretaria de Asuntos Nucleares. aunque su paso por los despachos no terminó bien. De ambos cargos fue destituido por su padre en junio de 1992. Tras un periodo de ostracismo, en 1999 se convirtió en asesor del Ministerio de Industria Básica.

Mirtha Díaz Balart tuvo también dos hijas con Emilio Núñez Blanco: Mirtha y Meky, que está casada con el productor discográfico Suso Sainz y es madre de dos hijas. Mirtha, la mayor, está divorciada y tiene una hija de 15 años, Laura. Ejerce como profesora de Historia en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Información de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. También ha publicado varios libros sobre la Guerra Civil española y la represión franquista. Y ahora está enfrascada en identificar a los fusilados en Madrid durante los primeros años de la dictadura.

EL TIEMPO HACE OLVIDAR.

Mirtha Díaz-Balart, la primera y única esposa con la que Fidel Castro se casó por la Iglesia, fue una de las primeras personas en enterarse de la enfermedad del dirigente cubano y en viajar desde España, donde reside desde 1968, para estar al lado de la familia del comandante.

Ha podido visitar a su ex marido con las debidas reservas para no levantar suspicacias y conocer personalmente su mal estado de salud. En los momentos decisivos, cuando uno se despide de la vida, la familia y los amigos, se olvidan las diferencias y para el comandante sólo cuenta el cariño y la querencia, dice un conocedor de la familia del dirigente cubano.

ELLA, DE FAMILIA RICA; ÉL, UN DIRIGENTE ESTUDIANTIL.

La principal disputa entre Fidel Castro Ruz y Mirtha Francisca de la Caridad Díaz-Balart Gutiérrez se produjo a causa de su hijo. Se habían conocido en la Universidad de La Habana cuando estudiaban Derecho. Ella pertenecía a una familia rica e influyente y él daba sus primeros pasos de dirigente estudiantil. Era el año 1948. Se enamoraron, se casaron, disfrutaron su luna de miel en Miami.

El 1 de septiembre de 1949 nacía su hijo Fidelito. Ella abandonó los estudios para cuidarlo. Pero Fidel seguía su camino, intervenía en la revuelta contra el dictador dominicano Trujillo, participaba en el ‘bogotazo’, organizaba el asalto al cuartel de Moncada el 26 de julio de 1953. Vino el fracaso, la cárcel, la medida de gracia del dictador Fulgencio Batista y su salida hacia México. En 1955, Mirtha se divorció de él.

Mirtha consiguió rescatarlo gracias a la intervención de la policía mexicana el 9 de diciembre de 1956. Unos días antes, Fidel, Raúl, Ernesto Che Guevara y otros 79 guerrilleros habían desembarcado en el Granma para guerrear contra el ejército de Batista.

Casi al final de sus días, el destino ha vuelto a jugarle una mala pasada. Hace ya meses, Mirtha viajó a Cuba a instancias de su hijo Fidelito. La instalaron en una vivienda de las que dispone el Consejo de Estado para personalidades que visitan el país por invitación oficial.

¿Tuvo que ver este requerimiento con el delicado estado de salud de Fidel Castro? ¿Viajó a la isla para despedirse del padre de su hijo? De hecho, Castro era operado de urgencia a causa de una grave dolencia intestinal el 31 de julio. Sin embargo, cuando Mirtha se encontraba en Cuba, ocurrió un suceso trágico e inesperado: Emilio, su segundo esposo, fallecía en Madrid, como corrobora a CRÓNICA Juana, una de las hermanas del dictador, residente en Miami. «Emilio murió en julio mientras ella estaba en Cuba. Padecía Alzheimer y, como sufría episodios muy agresivos, tuvieron que ingresarle.

Aquella disputa es agua pasada y, según fuentes de la familia, tanto Mirtha como Fidelito, que es ingeniero nuclear, sólo viven pendientes del desenlace del viejo. Sobre la gravedad y el estado de su enfermedad nada pueden comentar. Aun cuando Fidel Castro se presenta públicamente en contadas ocasiones ante la prensa o fotos con visitantes extranjeros y otros.

Sobre la apertura democrática del régimen, con su nombrado sucesor, Raúl, fuentes cercanas a ellos señalan que “será gradual” y explican que “el Ejército Revolucionario controla el país y defenderá las conquistas sociales y la continuidad del régimen frente a la voracidad del capitalismo salvaje de los sectores más radicales de Miami”.

Ha pasado un buen tiempo en el que las relaciones entre los EEUU y Cuba fueron restablecidas. Los años pasan rapido.(AV)
