El Secretario de Transporte de Estados Unidos, Anthony Fox, viajará a Cuba el próximo miércoles para recibir en el aeropuerto de Santa Clara al primer vuelo regular que conectará los dos países en más de cincuenta años, anunció este lunes el viceministro cubano de Transporte, Eduardo Rodríguez.

La llegada el próximo miércoles del primer vuelo que conecta Cuba y EE UU, de la aerolínea Jet Blue entre la ciudad estadounidense de Fort Lauderdale y la cubana de Santa Clara, es “un paso positivo en el proceso de mejoría de las relaciones entre ambos países”, indicó Rodríguez en una rueda de prensa este lunes en La Habana.
El memorando firmado entre los dos países prevé 20 vuelos diarios a La Habana y 10 al resto de aeropuertos internacionales del país, hasta 110 conexiones de ida y vuelta al día.
El costo de un pasaje de ida será de 99 dólares, mientras que el boleto de ida y vuelta costará 210 dólares, incluyendo impuestos y cobertura de seguro de salud requeridos por Cuba, por lo que es la tarifa más baja anunciada hasta ahora por una aerolínea comercial que vuela a la isla caribeña, si se comparaba con los precios actuales de los vuelos charter que oscilan entre 400 y 460 dólares, aseguró en un comunicado.
Los pasajes podrán ser adquiridos en Estados Unidos a través de la plataforma web de JetBlue o en los establecimientos habilitados.
Esta es la primera línea aérea comercial norteamericana que inicia sus operaciones comerciales con Cuba desde hace más de 50 años.
Los vuelos a la ciudad de Santa Clara serán los lunes, miércoles y viernes, hasta el 1 de octubre que iniciará los vuelos diarios, servicio que también ofrecerá en Camaguey, a partir del 3 de noviembre, y en Holguín a partir del 10 del propio mes.
Jet Blue iniciará la ruta con el vuelo inaugural del 31 de agosto a Santa Clara, y después se incorporará Silver Airways, que también volará a la misma ciudad a partir del 1 de septiembre y American Airlines lo hará el 7 septiembre a Cienfuegos.
El pasado 7 de julio, el gobierno estadounidense autorizó a ocho aerolíneas comerciales a realizar vuelos a Cuba, de acuerdo con un comunicado del secretario de Transporte, Anthony Foxx.
Las compañías aéreas que obtuvieron autorización son Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines y United Airlines, y de ellas seis iniciarán a corto plazo sus vuelos a la Isla.
Los vuelos a La Habana despegarán desde aeropuertos de Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, Carolina del Norte; Houston, Texas; Los Ángeles, California; Newark, Nueva Jersey; Nueva York, y Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando y Tampa, en Florida.
Quedan pendiente que se anuncie cuando comenzarán a volar las aerolíneas que tienen autorización para viajar a La Habana, cuya adjudicación se demoró más tiempo debido al gran número de solicitudes.
