Havana was a name that caught the Americans like two centuries ago. The deduction becomes after knowing that they there are about seven Havana scattered throughout several States, although with a different spelling.
The Habana originally is wrote with VEE and thus be copied then. The spelling continued during all the colonization of Latin America until the beginning of the century. La Habana fue un nombre que atrapó el gusto de norteamericanos dos centurias atrás. La deducción deviene luego de conocer que existen alrededor de siete Havana diseminadas por varios estados, aunque con una ortografía diferente.
La Habana originalmente se escribía con uve y así se copió entonces. Esa ortografía continuó durante toda la colonización de Latinoamérica hasta principios de siglo. Días antes del fin de la guerra de independencia un “erudito indigenista se le ocurrió pensar que los indios cubanos no pronunciaba la uve y que por lo tanto había que cambiar la ortografía de la Havana por Habana”. Y así se quedó La Habana como la capital de Cuba, pero no cambió la ortografía en las otras Havana.
Pero hubo quienes sacaron beneficio de esta sencilla reforma. En el norte de la Florida, cercano a su capital Tallahassee está Havana casi en la frontera con el estado de Georgia, una pequeña ciudad de tabaqueros. Casi todos estos sitios que llevan ese nombre son pequeños territorios en zonas rurales, con pocos habitantes. La mayor parte de las veces ni aparecen en el mapa. Sus costumbres, idioma, idiosincrasia, difieren de las nuestras, y puede que en sus paisajes y arquitectura tampoco coincidamos.
Digo “misterioso” porque en la mayoría de los casos, se pierde en la historia, en la leyenda, el origen del por qué se bautizaron o autobautizaron tantos lugares del gigantesco territorio norteamericano con el nombre de Havana.
