It was the year of 1839 when Hermann Dietrich Upmann, son of a master watchmaker born in Bremen 23 years earlier, decided to leave his hometown and crosses the Atlantic eagerly come to “do America”. During the long and monotonous journey, a passenger of British origin who traveled with destination to Havana convinced him to try luck in the capital of the island and enticed him with the rotation of the manufacture of cigars, economic sector that prospered in the colony.

Unmarried and dreamer, Hermann Dietrich followed the recommendations of the unknown traveler. Finally, August returned also to Germany, leaving to his two nephews at the front of the business. The company was renamed “H. Upmann and company”. Carl Julius, the third of the brothers, established a tobacco factory in New York under the brand name “Carl Upmann”.
To the start the first war world, the German residents in America were persecuted. In 1917 Herman Albert was forced to keep detention home and the family was virtually ruined by the crisis economic that ensued.
In 1922 the factory was sold at auction by the amount of 30,000 pesos gold and in December of the same year sold to the British company “Frankau, S.A.”, predecessor of the current “Hunters & Frankau Limited”.
Herman Albert died shortly after in the Havana, while his brother Heinrich Albert, married with an American, is was to live to them United States.
After buying the “H. Upmann”, Frankau leased it in 1924 to a society created by the brothers Manuel, Bernardo and Francisco José Solaun and also by Otto Brades, Paul Meyer and Francisco Fernández. The brothers Solaun were Spanish and had emigrated to Cuba in 1898, establishing is as growers of tobacco in the town of door of coup, province of Pinar of the river. Before buy the H. Upmann is had moved to the Havana where had bought the factory of pure “Baire”, located in the street Belascoain corner to San Rafael, where began to manufacture its pure H. Upmann. In 1928, they put the tobacco shop in the street figures.
In 1936, Frankau firm canceled the contract with the Solaun and a year later sold the brand “H. Upmann” the brothers Benjamin and Alonso Menéndez, owners, along with José García, “Special” factory, located in the virtues street number 609, workshop where they began to produce the newly acquired cigar brand.
The Menendez were owners of the brands “Byron” and “Individuals”, as well as a warehouse of tobacco in friendship street number 407. Shortly after introducing the brands “Monte Cristo” and “El Patio”, the “particular” sold “Cifuentes, Pego and company”, company that owns the factory “Partagás”.

Corría el año de 1839 cuando Hermann Dietrich Upmann, hijo de un maestro relojero nacido en Bremen 23 años antes, decide dejar atrás su ciudad natal y cruza el Atlántico con ansias de venir a «hacer la América». Durante la larga y monótona travesía, un pasajero de origen británico que viajaba con destino a La Habana lo convenció de que probara suerte en la capital de la Isla y lo tentó con el giro de la fabricación de puros, rubro económico que prosperaba en la Colonia.

Soltero y soñador, Hermann Dietrich siguió las recomendaciones del viajero desconocido. Aprendió lo que tenía que aprender acerca de los habanos y el 1ro. de marzo de 1844 abría su fábrica en la calle San Miguel 85. Su prestigio creció por días. H. Upmann llegaba a ser considerada, en su esfera, una de las cinco fábricas más poderosas de la Isla, y, por su seriedad, su propietario pasaba a formar parte de la directiva de la entonces recién creada Havana Cigar Brand Association, entidad que pretendía enfrentar la creciente falsificación de habanos.
En 1890 los Upmann construyeron un nuevo edificio para su fábrica, en la manzana comprendida entre las calles Carlos III, Belascoaín, Estrella y San Carlos. Fue este, en su época, uno de los edificios más grandes y hermosos de la ciudad.
Herman Upmann murió en Alemania en 1894. De su matrimonio con Marie Braesecke habían nacido tres hijos, Herman Albert, Albert Heinrich y Carl Julius. Después de la muerte del padre, los dos primeros fueron enviados a La Habana, donde aprendieron los secretos de la industria del tabaco bajo la tutela de su tío de August.
Finalmente, August regresó también a Alemania, dejando a sus dos sobrinos al frente de los negocios. La empresa pasó a denominarse “H. Upmann y Compañía”. Carl Julius, el tercero de los hermanos, estableció una fábrica de tabacos en Nueva York bajo la marca “Carl Upmann”.
Al comenzar la Primera Guerra Mundial, los alemanes residentes en América fueron perseguidos. En 1917 Herman Albert fue obligado a guardar reclusión domiciliaria y la familia quedó prácticamente arruinada por la crisis económica que sobrevino.
En 1922 la fábrica fue vendida en subasta por la cantidad de 30,000 pesos oro y en diciembre del mismo año vendida a la empresa británica “Frankau, S.A”, predecesora de la actual “Hunters & Frankau Limited”.
Herman Albert murió poco después en La Habana, en tanto que su hermano Heinrich Albert, casado con una norteamericana, se fue a vivir a los Estados Unidos.
Después de comprar la “H. Upmann”, Frankau la arrendó en 1924 a una sociedad creada por los hermanos Manuel, Bernardo, Francisco y José Solaun e integrada además por Otto Brades, Paul Meyer y Francisco Fernández. Los hermanos Solaun eran españoles y habían emigrado a Cuba en 1898, estableciéndose como cosecheros de tabaco en la localidad de Puerta de Golpe, provincia de Pinar del Río. Antes de comprar la H. Upmann se habían trasladado a La Habana donde habían comprado la fábrica de puros “Baire”, situada en la calle Belascoaín esquina a San Rafael, donde comenzaron a fabricar sus puros H. Upmann. En 1928 ubicaron la tabaquería en la calle Figuras.
En 1936 la firma Frankau canceló el contrato con los Solaun y un año después vendió la marca “H. Upmann” a los hermanos Benjamín y Alonso Menéndez, propietarios, junto con José García, de la fábrica “Particulares”, situada en la calle Virtudes número 609, taller donde comenzaron a producir puros de la recién adquirida marca.
Los Menéndez-García eran propietarios de las marcas “Byron” y “Particulares”, así como también de un almacén de tabaco en rama en la calle Amistad número 407. Poco después de introducir las marcas “Montecristo” y “El Patio”, vendieron la “Particulares” a la “Cifuentes, Pego y Compañía”, empresa propietaria de la fábrica “Partagás”.

Cuando la marca “H. Upmann” estaba próxima a cumplir su primer centenario, los Menéndez-García quisieron celebrarlo inaugurando un nuevo edificio para su fábrica. Utilizaron para construirlo los terrenos donde se alzaba su almacén de rama en la calle Amistad. La nueva construcción fue estrenada en 1944.
En 1960 la empresa fue intervenida por el gobierno de Fidel Castro, permaneciendo en la calle Amistad hasta que fue trasladada a un nuevo taller en la calle 23 del Vedado, lugar donde había funcionado durante muchos años la fábrica de cigarrillos Partagás.
