María Isabel del Rosario Díaz, conocida como Isabel Rubio.Muchos hemos oído este nombre que lleva un pueblo de la provincia de Pinar del Río, pero ¿Quién fue María Isabel del Rosario Díaz, conocida como Isabel Rubio.?
Les cuento que fue una mujer extraordinaria que inculcó, en momentos de incertidumbre y pesimismo, la fe en el ideal de ver a Cuba redimida de la esclavitud española y que afrontó al sonar la hora del sacrificio, todo género de peligros. Para rematar de modo digno su apostolado sucumbió al servicio de la libertad de su patria.
Cuando el mensaje del José Martí taladró su corazón, cuando el nombre y hazañas del General Antonio Maceo, llegaban a sus oídos, en su tierra natal “Paso Real de Guane”, Isabel era el eje de la agitación revolucionaria, nadie la superó en disposición al sacrificio. Su casa fue templo de patriotismo, escuela de altos deberes cívicos y revolucionarios. Con su prédica revolucionaria logró que a la gesta independentista se incorporara lo mejor de la juventud de su región, y, por supuesto, su hermano, su hijo Modesto y su nieto César.

Cuando la invasión llegó a tierras pinareñas, el General Maceo, conocedor de sus valores, quiso visitarla y se encontró con ella al llegar Paso Real de Guane. Grande fue la emoción de Isabel al ver junto al jefe de la invasión a su hijo Modesto Gómez Rubio. Se unió a la tropa como capitana de salud al frente del hospital militar ambulante. Dura fue la tarea de enfrentar los frecuentes ataques y persecuciones de que era objeto su hospital.
El 12 de febrero de 1898, el hospital, instalado en El Seborucal, en territorio de Los Palacios, Pinar del Rio, fue descubierto y asaltado por la tropa enemiga. Aquella mujer todo coraje, se enfrentó a la balas enemigas para salvar a los seres indefensos confiados a su cuidado, cayó herida en un pierna por un fatal balazo, los enfermos fueron acuchillados por españoles desalmados y cubanos traidores. Isabel fue conducida prisionera al Hospital de San Isidro, donde murió. Su pueblo, Paso Real de Guane, hoy lleva su glorioso nombre: Isabel Rubio.
