A propósito de los cambios efectuados en la monarquía española, recordamos cuando en 1933, el hijo del Rey de España Alfonso XIII, el joven Alfonso de Borbón, Príncipe de Asturias, renunció a sus derechos al trono español para casarse con la cubanita Edelmira Ignacia Adriana Sampedro-Ocejo y Robato (05 de marzo de 1906 en Sagua La Grande – 23 de mayo de 1994 en Coral Gables) Florida) conocida como Condesa de Covadonga después de su matrimonio con Alfonso , ex Príncipe de Asturias en 1933. Este muchacho podía decir sin dudar: mi reino por un amor!

Y ya que estamos de recorrido amoroso por la monarquía española, le quiero contar una especie de novela rosa. Cuando Manuel Güell, cubano, atleta y estudiante de derecho de la Universidad Central de Madrid, se encontraba aquel día con varios compañeros en el Paso de la Castellana, vio cómo un brioso caballo que tiraba de un lujoso coche corría desbocado, al advertir el joven cubano que el carruaje lo ocupaban dos damas, corrió y logró tomar por el cuello a la bestia y detener su peligrosa carrera. Las damas aun temerosas y agradecidas saludaban al intrépido joven. Todo hubiera pasado como un hermoso gesto, si una de las damas no fuera María Josefa, la hermana del rey Alfonso XII.
Días después el Rey mandó a buscar al joven y ante la corte, para agradecerle el gesto de salvar la vida de su hermanita, aunque no tuvo la delicadeza ni de regarle ni un turrón de Jijona o… una botella de vino “de la casa”.

Pero se sucedían los días y los dos jóvenes seguían viéndose por el Paseo de la Castellana, ahora sin Carruaje ni caballos. Fueron días de idilio amoroso. Pero se olvidaron de algo muy importante. José era un plebeyo, no disponía de abolengo. El Rey prohibió terminante a su hermanita continuar viéndose, ni de lejos, con el criollo Pepe. Pero la pareja, desobedeciendo la orden real, continuaba encontrándose por los rincones del Paseo.
Enterado, el Rey, borró a su hermana de la familia, la desheredó, le quitó el título, pero la princesa se casó con Pepe, el cubano y fueron muy felices y tuvieron muchos hijos, los que visitaban con frecuencia a sus abuelos en el Cerro.
