EL DIA DE DAR GRACIAS A LO CUBANO. (DIA DE THANKSGIVING).
Without a doubt the Thanksgiving is a habit in this country that the cubans exiled like it. We love this beautiful tradition, we have it accepted and have added it to our celebrations.
Give thanks to God (apart from at all times) given day is something beautiful. Good, but even though, like I said, we love the Thanksgiving from the first moment the rugged Turkey don’t want us both.
And then we have infatuated to Cuban flavor to the Turkey. What’s more, even the Peacock Word sounds us strange because for us that is guanajo. And the primerito that we add to the Thanksgiving is THE SOUR ORANGE.
And then we spend hours on the “apreparos” of Turkey. I.e., we ask the wife: “Honey, marinated Turkey just like if you were doing a leg of pork”. That’s incredible because if what we want is to know to pork why we not best buy and make a pork and have?…
Then we eliminate most of the food with the Americans around the Turkey and we add more or less the same (congri, yucca, fried plantains) use on Christmas Eve. It is as if the Thanksgiving was a foretaste, a “practice” of what will be the Christmas dinner.
You will not believe it me but the last Thanksgiving they invited an old Cuban who had been widowed recently and I said: “Boy, everything was very good, but forgot them to serve a few chatinos”. I was a bit surprised not knowing what to say because I don’t call them “chatino” but “green bananas with his fists”…
The Cuban people we have sent to our children and grandchildren to religious schools we are happy that day because we use the boys so they pray before that we begin to eat. Nothing proud over to me to see my grandson André arise and give thanks to God on behalf of all present.
Personally falls to me as a Halloween kick. That boys ask for candies to strangers doesn’t like me at all, but for me the most beautiful day of the year is the Thanksgiving Day where the family gathers and spend quiet, peaceful, beautiful, moments of fellowship and gratitude to the Supreme being.
If you ask me what custom alien you would take to Cuba tomorrow when they are free? I believe that I would not think it a second and say: the Thanksgiving. And I am sure that it will be. I have no doubt of that, because if we are not we are our heirs, who were born and have grown up here, who certainly take that precious tradition to Cuban lands.
And not be surprised (as well are the things of life) that day back in Cuba libre instead of “black beans and cassava” put to want to eat the rugged Turkey with “mash potatoes”, sweet potatoes in Tin and maize.
Certainly there will be us insisting on “Knight, throw more sour, Orange put enough garlic to this guanajo, if not well pickled it overnight will not know anything!”. And there we will see grandchildren saying: “Don’t worry grandfather, next month, the 24th, you open a hole in the yard and do the sucker as you like”. I wish my readers a happy Thanksgiving.

EL DIA DE DAR GRACIAS (DÍA DE THANKSGIVING).
Sin lugar a dudas el Thanksgiving es la costumbre de este país que más nos ha gustado a los cubanos exiliados. Nos encanta esa bella tradición, la hemos aceptados y la hemos agregado a nuestras celebraciones.
Darle Gracias a Dios (aparte de en todo momento) determinado día es algo lindísimo. Bueno, pero si bien, como les dije, nos encanta el Thanksgiving desde el primer momento el pavo desabrido no nos apetece tanto.
Y entonces nos hemos encaprichado en darle sabor cubano al pavo. Es mas, hasta la palabra pavo nos suena extraña porque para nosotros eso es guanajo. Y lo primerito que le agregamos al Thanksgiving es LA NARANJA AGRIA.
Y entonces le dedicamos horas a los “apreparos” del pavo. Es decir, le decimos a la esposa: “Mi amor, adoba el pavo igualito que si estuvieras haciendo una pierna de puerco”. Eso es increíble porque si lo que queremos es que sepa a carne de puerco ¿por qué mejor no compramos y hacemos un pernil y sanseacabó?…
Entonces eliminamos la mayoría de los alimentos con que los americanos rodean al pavo y nosotros le agregamos mas o menos los mismos (congrí, yuca, plátanos maduros fritos) que utilizamos el día de nochebuena. Es como si el Thanksgiving fuera un anticipo, una “práctica” de lo que será la cena navideña.
Ustedes no me lo creerán pero él ultimo Thanksgiving invitaron a un viejo cubano que había quedado viudo recientemente y este me dijo: “Chico, todo estuvo muy bueno, pero se les olvidó servir unos cuantos chatinos”. Yo me quedé un poco sorprendido sin saber qué responder porque yo no les llamo “chatino” sino “plátanos verdes a puñetazos”…
Los cubanos que hemos enviado a nuestros hijos y nietos a colegios religiosos nos ponemos dichosos ese día porque utilizamos a los muchachos para que recen antes que comencemos a comer. Nada me enorgullece más a mí que ver a mi nieto Andre levantarse y darle gracias a Dios en nombre de todos los presentes.
A mí personalmente me cae como una patada el Halloween. Eso de los muchachos pedirle caramelos a extraños no me agrada en lo absoluto, pero para mí el día más precioso del año es el Thanksgiving, día donde se reúne toda la familia y se pasan momentos tranquilos, pacíficos, bellos, de confraternidad y de agradecimiento al Ser Supremo.
Si usted me pregunta ¿qué costumbre ajena te gustaría llevar a Cuba el día de mañana cuando seamos libres? Yo creo que no lo pensaría ni un segundo y respondería: el Thanksgiving. Y yo estoy seguro que así será. No tengo dudas de eso, porque si no somos nosotros serán nuestros herederos, los que han nacido y se han criado aquí, quienes con toda seguridad llevarán esa preciosa tradición a tierras cubanas.
Y no me sorprendería (así son las cosas de la vida) que ese día allá en Cuba libre en lugar de “frijoles negros y yuca” se pongan a querer comer el pavo desabrido con “mash potatoes”, boniatos de lata y maíz.
Desde luego, allí estaremos nosotros insistiendo en “¡Caballero, échenle más naranja agria, pónganle bastante ajo a ese guanajo, si no lo adoban bien desde la noche anterior no va a saber a nada!”. Y allá veremos a los nietos diciendo: “Don’t worry abuelo, next month, el día 24, abres un hueco en el patio y haces el lechón como a ti te gusta”. A mis lectores les deseo un feliz Thanksgiving.
