AMERICAN COMPANIES RUSH NEGOTIATIONS WITH CUBA BEFORE YEAR’S END.
Several U.S. companies are preparing to sign agreements with the Cuban Government, in what would be the last attempt of the administration of Barack Obama consolidate the policy of rapprochement to Cuba until it leaves office in January.
The giant of the internet, Google, the cruise lines Norwegian Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Pearl Seas Cruises as well as the emblematic General Electric, are some of the companies that would be very close signed an agreement with Cuba, according to several sources to el Nuevo Herald and the Miami Herald commented.
A source with knowledge of the agreement, told el Nuevo Herald that the business of General Electric with Cuba is related to a hydro power plant in the province of Matanzas. The Government considers renewable energy as one of the priority to foreign investment.
General Electric and Pearl Seas Cruises did not respond immediately to a request for comment for this article. General Electric had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Cuban Government in the areas of energy, medical equipment, and aviation, according to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the impending agreements on Thursday.
“We are optimistic about the prospect of visiting Cuba, and we are working closely with the Cuban Government to complete the necessary approvals,” wrote spokeswoman Pearl Seas Cruises, Christine Schrager in an email. “We expect to operate 10 night cruises currently planned in 2017,” he added.
In an email, Rob Zeiger, director of communication of Royal Caribbean, based in Miami, said the company “still had no ads that report on Cuba”.
Vanessa Picariello, spokeswoman for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, also based in Miami, said that the cruise company was “in continuing talks with the competent authorities in Cuba on behalf of the three brands: Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises”.
According to a source with knowledge of the negotiations, the signing of the agreements could be soon and was delayed by the death of Fidel Castro on Friday of last week.
The Cuban Government has been slow to authorize agreements with U.S. companies but the choice of Donald Trump as President, who has vowed to renegotiate agreements with Cuba and even reverse them if USA does not get better, would have acted as an incentive, according to sources, they said. At the same time, the White House would have urged Cubans to sign agreements to strengthen the policy of engagement (approach) promoted by Obama and prevent that it can easily be reversed by the new administration.
An Executive of the company Google said that he couldn’t comment on the content of the agreement with the Cuban Government, but that the company would issue a statement soon.
In September, Josefina Vidal, head of the Department of the United States of the Cuban Foreign Ministry and central figure in the negotiations with the United States, had announced that the Governments of Cuba and the United States were rushing to finalize at least six agreements before year’s end. He also said that Cuba, ETECSA, telecommunications company would be in talks with U.S. suppliers that have already signed agreements, to offer Internet services.

Varias compañías estadounidenses se aprestan a firmar acuerdos con el gobierno cubano, en lo que sería el último intento de la administración de Barack Obama de consolidar la política de acercamiento a Cuba antes de que este abandone su cargo en enero.
El gigante de la internet, Google, las líneas de cruceros Norwegian Cruises, Royal Caribbean y Pearl Seas Cruises así como la emblemática General Electric, son algunas de las compañías que estarían muy cerca de firmar un acuerdo con Cuba, según comentaron varias fuentes a el Nuevo Herald y Miami Herald.
Una fuente con conocimiento del acuerdo, dijo a el Nuevo Herald que el negocio de General Electric con Cuba está relacionado con una central hidroeléctrica en la provincia de Matanzas. El gobierno considera a las energías renovables como uno de los campos priorizados para la inversión extranjera.
General Electric y Pearl Seas Cruises no respondieron inmediatamente a una petición de comentario para este artículo. General Electric había firmado un memorando de entendimiento con el gobierno cubano en las áreas de energía, equipos médicos y aviación, según reportó The Wall Street Journal, que informó primero sobre los inminentes acuerdos este jueves.

Según una fuente con conocimiento de las negociaciones, la firma de los acuerdos podría ser pronto y se vio demorada por la muerte de Fidel Castro el viernes de la semana pasada.
El gobierno cubano ha sido lento en autorizar acuerdos con compañías estadounidenses pero la elección de Donald Trump como presidente, quien ha prometido renegociar los acuerdos con Cuba e incluso revertirlos si EEUU no obtiene mejores condiciones, habría actuado como un incentivo, según comentaron las fuentes. Al mismo tiempo, la Casa Blanca habría instado a los cubanos a firmar los acuerdos para consolidar la política de engagement (acercamiento) promovida por Obama e impedir que pueda ser fácilmente revertida por la nueva Administración.
Un ejecutivo de la compañía Google dijo que no podía comentar sobre el contenido del acuerdo con el gobierno cubano pero que la compañía debía emitir pronto un comunicado.
En septiembre, Josefina Vidal, la jefa del Departamento de Estados Unidos de la cancillería cubana y figura central en las negociaciones con Estados Unidos, había anunciado que los gobiernos de Cuba y Estados Unidos se estaban apresurando para concretar al menos seis acuerdos antes de fin de año. También dijo que la compañía de telecomunicaciones de Cuba, ETECSA, estaría en conversaciones con proveedores estadounidenses con los que ya tienen acuerdos firmados, acerca de ofrecer servicios de Internet.
