“I am concerned, Yes, and I felt grief for his death, although that story took place more than 60 years ago. These days I have prayed for his soul, I am a Christian,”said Mirta Diaz-Balart, Fidel Castro’s ex-wife and mother of his eldest son.
“I remember my marriage with Fidel as something far away,” he told the Spanish newspaper El Mundo. “But also as a very nice stage of my youth. I’ve never liked him evil, always I wanted good things”.

Mirta Diaz-Balart, Cuban high society member, fell in love with Castro at the Havana University, where both were studying.
Her father, Rafael Jose Diaz-Balart, was Mayor of the city of Banes, and her brother Rafael Undersecretary of Government of Fulgencio Batista.
Married to Castro by the Church in 1948, when she was 20 years and the 22. They were honeymoon in Miami and New York. Eleven months later, was born Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart. The couple divorced in 1955.
“Because as usual (…)” “Men, you know”, said Mirta regarding this, apparently referring to the infidelities of Castro, although the political activity of the future dictator would have also away them.

“There has never been bad words in our separation, we broke civilly. I never have liked him no evil”, he added, however.
Mirta was later married to Emilio Núñez Blanco, lawyer and notary, son of Emilio Núñez Portuondo, Cuban at the UN and adept Ambassador to Batista. Both were established in Madrid at the end of the 60s with their two daughters, Mirta and America Silvia. Fidelito, her son with Castro, was sent by his father to study in the Soviet Union.
In Spain were also Waldo (painter) and Rafael Diaz-Balart (the old senior Batista), Mirta brothers.
Rafael is the father of Lincoln (ex representante) and Mario Diaz-Balart, Republican Congressman for Florida.
The first-born of Castro and his mother have been found both in Spain and Cuba, but Mirta Diaz-Balart denies rumors that it was on the island in 2006 to say goodbye to Castro, once this became seriously ill and was forced to cede power to his brother.
“My son had been unable to ask me that. I have traveled several times to Havana to be with my son, but I was staying at home, without any preferential treatment. Nor I have seen ever Fidel Castro nor I have spoken with him,” she said.
According to their version, after exile in Spain the only link that has kept her her first husband was the son in common.

A woman who ran a different sort, the German Marita Lorenz, ex amante of Castro who was sent by the CIA to Havana to try to kill it, said that she wants to go to the island to say goodbye to him and seek the son who says, they seized him in Cuba.
“I always wanted to see him again, and I tried it, but it could not be. I will soon go to pay our respects to him and look for my son,”Lorenz told Vanitatis, the Spanish publication confidential supplement.
Lorenz, of 76 years, today lives in a small apartment in Queens. She met Castro with 19 years and lived with it a romance in Havana until she became pregnant.
As told in her book I was the spy who loved the Commander, they drugged her for causing birth and she was then sent to New York.

“They told me that she had suffered a miscarriage, but the gynecologist from New York told me about a caused birth. Abortion was false. The pregnancy was almost at the end and my son was born when I was in a coma in Cuba. It is a guy. He grew up there and is called Andrés Vázquez,”said Lorenz last September.
She said that she could see his son in 1981, when Castro agreed to receive it after 20 years without seeing him.
“I begged him that I submit to our son. Then he opened the door and Andres appeared. He resembled his father. His hands and his face were identical. I gave him the gifts that had taken him. He told me that he was studying medicine. Meanwhile, I couldn’t stop crying”, he told.
Earlier in 1961, Lorenz traveled to Cuba sent by the CIA to kill Castro, but was unable to do so.

“Estoy afectada, sí, y he sentido pena por su muerte, aunque esa historia ocurrió hace más de 60 años. Estos días he rezado por su alma, yo soy cristiana”, dijo Mirta Díaz-Balart, exesposa de Fidel Castro y madre de su primogénito.
“Recuerdo mi matrimonio con Fidel como algo lejano”, declaró al diario español El Mundo. “Pero también como una etapa muy bonita de mi juventud. Yo nunca le he deseado el mal, siempre le deseé cosas buenas”.

Mirta Díaz-Balart, miembro de la alta sociedad cubana, se enamoró de Castro en la Universidad de La Habana, donde ambos estudiaban.
Su padre, Rafael José Díaz-Balart, fue alcalde de la ciudad de Banes, y su hermano Rafael subsecretario de Gobernación de Fulgencio Batista.
Se casó con Castro por la iglesia en 1948, cuando tenía 20 años y él 22. Estuvieron de luna de miel en Miami y Nueva York. Once meses después, nació Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart. La pareja se divorció en 1955.
“Pues por lo de siempre (…) Los hombres, ya se sabe”, respondió Mirta al respecto, al parecer refiriéndose a las infidelidades de Castro, aunque la actividad política del futuro dictador también los habría alejado.

“En nuestra separación nunca hubo malas palabras, rompimos civilizadamente. Yo jamás le he deseado ningún mal”, añadió, no obstante.
Mirta se casó más tarde con Emilio Núñez Blanco, abogado y notario, hijo de Emilio Núñez Portuondo, embajador cubano en la ONU y adepto a Batista. Ambos se establecieron en Madrid a finales de los 60 con sus dos hijas, Mirta y América Silvia. Fidelito, su hijo con Castro, fue enviado por su padre a estudiar en la Unión Soviética.
En España residían también Waldo (pintor) y Rafael Díaz-Balart (el antiguo alto cargo de Batista), hermanos de Mirta.
Rafael es padre de Lincoln (exrepresentante) y Mario Díaz-Balart, congresista republicano por Florida.
El primogénito de Castro y su madre se han encontrado tanto en España como en Cuba, pero Mirta Díaz-Balart niega los rumores de que estuvo en la Isla en 2006 para despedirse de Castro, después de que este enfermara gravemente y se viera obligado a ceder el poder a su hermano.
“Mi hijo hubiera sido incapaz de pedirme eso. He viajado en varias ocasiones a La Habana para estar con mi hijo, pero me alojaba en su casa, sin trato de favor alguno. Tampoco he vuelto a ver jamás a Fidel Castro ni he hablado con él”, aseguró.
Según su versión, tras exiliarse en España el único vínculo que ha mantenido con su primer esposo ha sido el hijo en común.

Una mujer que corrió una suerte distinta, la alemana Marita Lorenz, examante de Castro que fue enviada por la CIA a La Habana para intentar matarlo, dijo que quiere ir a la Isla a despedirse de él y a buscar al hijo que, asegura, le arrebataron en Cuba.
“Siempre quise verle de nuevo, y lo intenté, pero no pudo ser. Iré próximamente a presentarle nuestros respetos y buscaré a mi hijo”, dijo Lorenz a Vanitatis, suplemento de la publicación española Confidencial.
Lorenz, de 76 años, vive hoy en un pequeño piso de Queens. Conoció a Castro con 19 años y vivió con él un romance en La Habana hasta que quedó embarazada.
Según cuenta en su libro Yo fui la espía que amó al comandante, la drogaron para provocarle el parto y luego la enviaron a Nueva York.

“Me dijeron que había sufrido un aborto, pero el ginecólogo de Nueva York me habló de un parto provocado. Lo del aborto era falso. El embarazo estaba casi a término y mi hijo nació cuando yo estaba en coma en Cuba. Es un chico. Creció allí y se llama Andrés Vázquez”, dijo Lorenz en septiembre pasado.
Afirmó que pudo ver a su hijo en 1981, cuando Castro aceptó recibirla tras 20 años sin verlo.
“Le supliqué que me presentase a nuestro hijo. Entonces abrió la puerta y apareció Andrés. Se parecía a su padre. Sus manos y su rostro eran idénticos. Le di los regalos que le había llevado. Me dijo que estudiaba Medicina. Mientras, yo no paraba de llorar”, contó.
Antes, en 1961, Lorenz viajó a Cuba enviada por la CIA para matar a Castro, pero no fue capaz de hacerlo.
