The Hotel Nacional was built high on a hill overlooking the sea, but that hill houses one of the most historical caves on the island of Cuba.

The Hotel Nacional stands on a rocky promontory at the entrance of the Havana neighborhood of El Vedado, which makes it a must see in the cityscape of the capital, and that location, in what was the seat of the battery Of Spanish canyons of Santa Clara, makes from the hotel an unbeatable view of the city and the sea, with which it integrates because its front gardens are projected towards the city area while they appear to be in the waters of the gulf Gardens behind this beautiful building that combines in its architecture the eclectic and the modern, with the presence of art deco and the so-called Cuban colonial style.
An old legend is associated with the place where stands the Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Underneath the rock where it sinks its foundations were several caves, among them the very famous cave of Taganana.
THE CAVE OF TAGANANA.
The hill of Taganana, as it is known, is located in the coastal outcrop of Punta Brava, almost to the extreme of the cove of San Lázaro, and was a habitual place of pirate landings, that took its name of another cavern in the island Canaria of Tenerife where the princess guanche Cathaysa took refuge, that was captured and sold by the Castilians like slave in 1494.
In Cuba, the legend says that one of the caves under the Taganana hill served as a shelter for a Cuban Indian of the same name who fled from his Spanish persecutors.
The great Cuban novelist Cirilo Villaverde immortalized these creations of the popular imaginary in his literary work.
In this strategic elevation was installed in the mid-nineteenth century the so-called battery of Santa Clara canyons. The canyon “Ordonez”, one of the largest of the time, still rests at its base and offers the curiosity of those who visit the magnificent gardens of the hotel.

La distinción, la elegancia y el lujo se combinan con la eficacia de los servicios en una instalación que a lo largo de los años acogió a huéspedes como Winston Churchill y el rey Eduardo VIII, de Inglaterra; Ava Gardner y Marlon Brando, Graham Greene y García Márquez, Robert Redford y Steven Spielberg y muchísimos otros famosos, entre los que destacan María Félix, Libertad Lamarque, Jorge Negrete, Pierre Cardin, Nat King Cole… Inaugurado en 1930, hace ahora 82 años, el Hotel Nacional de Cuba, el más majestuoso e imponente de la Isla, es, sencillamente, clásico.
El Hotel Nacional fue construido en lo alto de una colina que mira al mar, pero esa colina alberga una de las cuevas con más historia en la isla de Cuba.
El Hotel Nacional se levanta sobre un promontorio rocoso a la entrada de la barriada habanera de El Vedado, lo que lo convierte en un punto visual obligado en el paisaje urbano de la capital, y esa ubicación, en lo que fue el asiento de la batería de cañones españoles de Santa Clara, hace que desde el hotel se disfrute de una vista insuperable de la ciudad y del mar, con los que se integra pues sus jardines delanteros se proyectan hacia el ámbito citadino mientras que parecen internarse en las aguas del golfo los jardines traseros de esta edificación hermosísima que conjuga en su arquitectura lo ecléctico y lo moderno, con presencia del art déco y el llamado estilo colonial cubano.

Una antigua leyenda se asocia con el lugar donde se alza el Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Debajo del peñón donde hunde sus cimientos hubo varias cavernas, entre ellas la muy célebre cueva de Taganana.
LA CUEVA DE TAGANANA.
La loma de Taganana, como se la conoce, está ubicada en el saliente costero de Punta Brava, casi al extremo de la caleta de San Lázaro, y era un sitio habitual de desembarcos de piratas, que tomó su nombre de otra caverna en la isla canaria de Tenerife donde se refugió la princesa guanche Cathaysa, quien fue capturada y vendida por los castellanos como esclava en 1494.
En Cuba, asegura la leyenda que una de las cuevas bajo la loma del Taganana sirvió de albergue a un indio cubano del mismo nombre que huía de sus perseguidores españoles.
El gran novelista cubano Cirilo Villaverde inmortalizó estas creaciones del imaginario popular en su obra literaria.
En esta elevación estratégica fue instalada a mediados del siglo XIX la llamada batería de cañones de Santa Clara. El cañón “Ordóñez”, uno de los más grandes de la época, aún descansa en su base y se ofrece a la curiosidad de quienes visitan los magníficos jardines del hotel.
