I wanted to share with you the 6 most important things to carry in Cuba! Although we all have different necessities – I am sure you won’t want to be caught without any of these 6! Having been there recently we learned that the list is a little different than normal….
I always pack my lightweight nylon gym sack by Nike in our luggage to use on shore at our cruise destinations. I like the fact that the top of this type of bag closes tightly, with a drawstring especially since I will be carrying it behind me and I wouldn’t want to worry about anyone being able to get into it… but I also don’t like to have to tie and untie my bag. I like to have a separate zip pouch where I can put certain things, making them easier to find.
In a questionable area I carry the bag with the zipper pouch toward my body. I learned years ago that the cheap bags can spring a leak – or are just more difficult to dig through. But what I carry in the bag is the most important thing

Paper and a Pen – as we stumble around using our limited Spanish we found that writing things down and drawing pictures can be very useful! The Cuban people are very helpful and curious. You may want to write down the name of a Restaurant that you are told about, it’s location, or even record the name of someone you spoke to. But also expect to be asked questions related to just about anything…. beginning with “Where are you from?” after which a Cuban will tell you about a relative of theirs that lives in the states…. A small journal or spiral notebook will work perfectly – get it before you leave! All they have on the ship are designer journals……
Your Wallet – should contain your ID, Ship Card, and some local money. There is only one kind of money that a tourist can have, it is called CUC, and has buildings on it (as opposed to people) and is about equal to the USD. There is no need for credit cards, so don’t take them. I also recommend taking your passport and visa landing card. I keep these things in the zipped pouch, so that they are easy to find. I suggest putting your passport in a ziplock bag to protect it from dampness like a spill, rain or sweat……
Sunscreen and a clean damp cloth in a ziplock bag. It is hot hot hot in Cuba. Please prevent sunburn – it can ruin your trip in a big hurry. A light colored hat will keep your head cool and may even provide some shade. Once you get all sweaty the clean damp cloth will be a refreshing way to cool off a bit. We borrowed one from the ship.
Paper Map – because your phone won’t work! Like us, you will see young people lining the streets in certain places that appear to have wifi, but your device won’t see it at all. There is no functional internet in Cuba for us. Make sure you carry a map so you can wander to your heart’s content and still find your way back.
Wipes – of 2 kinds. TP is a rare commodity in Cuba. You will want to make sure to carry tissue. I also recommend hand sanitizer or bleach wipes that can be used to cleanse your hands. After all you might touch something you wish you had not. When we expose ourselves to unfamiliar germs we are more likely to be susceptible to illness.
Battery pack for re-charging your phone (camera) – Don’t leave your phone behind just because you won’t have wifi. Our phones take beautiful pictures and you will be using your phone as a camera so much that it likely won’t last long…. Turn off your cellular data and wifi to make it last longer…. But be sure to have a battery pack and charging cord with you so you can keep recording your memories all day…… Here are an option from plug in to solar – choose your favorite!

Quería compartir con ustedes las 6 cosas más importantes para llevar en Cuba! Aunque todos tenemos diferentes necesidades – estoy seguro de que no querrá ser atrapado sin ninguno de estos 6! Habiendo estado allí recientemente nos enteramos de que la lista es un poco diferente de lo normal ….
Siempre embalaje mi saco de gimnasio de nylon ligero por Nike en nuestro equipaje para usar en la costa en nuestros destinos de crucero. Me gusta el hecho de que la parte superior de este tipo de bolsa se cierra bien, con un cordón, especialmente porque voy a llevar detrás de mí y no me gustaría preocuparse de que nadie sea capaz de entrar en ella … pero también no Me gusta tener que atar y desatar mi bolsa. Me gusta tener una bolsa zip separado donde puedo poner ciertas cosas, haciéndolos más fáciles de encontrar.
En un área cuestionable llevo la bolsa con la bolsa de cremallera hacia mi cuerpo. Aprendí hace años que las bolsas baratas pueden provocar una fuga – o son más difíciles de cavar a través. Pero lo que llevo en la bolsa es lo más importante

Papel y una pluma – como nos tropiezan con nuestro español limitado que encontramos que escribir cosas y dibujos puede ser muy útil! El pueblo cubano es muy servicial y curioso. Es posible que desee escribir el nombre de un restaurante que se le dice, su ubicación, o incluso registrar el nombre de alguien que habló. Pero también esperan que se le hagan preguntas relacionadas con casi cualquier cosa …. Comenzando por “¿De dónde eres?”, Después de lo cual un cubano te hablará de un pariente suyo que vive en los estados …. Un pequeño diario o un cuaderno espiral funcionará perfectamente – ¡consígalo antes de que usted se vaya! Todo lo que tienen en la nave son revistas de diseño ……
Su cartera – debe contener su identificación, tarjeta de envío, y algo de dinero local. Sólo hay un tipo de dinero que un turista puede tener, se llama CUC, y tiene edificios en él (en contraposición a la gente) y es casi igual al USD. No hay necesidad de tarjetas de crédito, así que no las tome. También recomiendo tomar su pasaporte y tarjeta de aterrizaje de visado. Mantengo estas cosas en la bolsa con cremallera, para que sean fáciles de encontrar. Sugiero poner su pasaporte en una bolsa ziplock para protegerlo de la humedad como un derrame, lluvia o sudor …
Protector solar y un paño húmedo limpio en una bolsa ziplock. Hace calor caliente en Cuba. Por favor, evitar las quemaduras de sol – puede arruinar su viaje en una gran prisa. Un sombrero de color claro mantendrá su cabeza fresca y puede incluso proporcionar un poco de sombra. Una vez que usted consigue todo el sudor el paño húmedo limpio será una manera refrescante refrescarse apagado un pedacito. Tomamos prestado uno de la nave.
Mapa del papel: ¡porque su teléfono no funcionará! Al igual que nosotros, usted verá a los jóvenes recorriendo las calles en ciertos lugares que parecen tener wifi, pero su dispositivo no lo verá en absoluto. No hay internet funcional en Cuba para nosotros. Asegúrese de llevar un mapa para que pueda vagar a su contenido del corazón y todavía encontrar su camino de regreso.
Toallitas – de 2 tipos. TP es una mercancía rara en Cuba. Usted querrá asegurarse de llevar el tejido. También recomiendo desinfectante para manos o toallitas blanqueadoras que se pueden utilizar para limpiar las manos. Después de todo, podrías tocar algo que no quisieras. Cuando nos exponemos a gérmenes desconocidos, es más probable que seamos susceptibles a la enfermedad.
Paquete de batería para volver a cargar su teléfono (cámara) – No deje el teléfono atrás sólo porque no tendrá wifi. Nuestros teléfonos toman bellas fotos y usarás tu teléfono como una cámara tanto que probablemente no durará mucho tiempo …. Apague sus datos celulares y wifi para que dure más tiempo ….
