Ángel María Castro, a young and humble Galician who emigrated to Cuba in the late nineteenth century, has passed to posterity for being the father of Fidel Castro, here an interesting account of the life of the father of the Castro and his descendants.
At one end of Láncara is the humble dwelling where he was born in December 1875. Láncara is a Spanish municipality belonging to the province of Lugo, in the Autonomous Community of Galicia.
As a good transatlantic emigrant, Angel María Castro Argiz had several lives. Father of twelve children of two marriages, was a peasant in Lugo, baker in Madrid, soldier in Cuba, famous tahúr in Galicia, returned to Galicia, an emigrant back on the island, contractor of the United States multinational United Fruit Company and rich landowner, Cacique of an extension of 11,000 hectares.
However, his most spectacular identity is being built fifty years after his death, that of the patriarch of a communist dynasty, that of Fidel and Raúl Castro, the brothers who transfer power in Cuba with the naturalness of a monarchy.
We will not narrate how he became a rich landowner in Cuba, but I leave the picture of the family farm in Biran. It is located geographically to the north center of the old province of East, that belonged to the judicial term Mayari.
In 1911 Angel Castro married María Argota Reyes, with whom she had five children, although two of them died shortly after birth. Maria was a teacher and Angel had already become a powerful landowner.
Then another woman appeared, Lina Ruz, the daughter of a family who worked in the hacienda and who was a cook in the main house. For a time they kept the romance secret, but upon learning María Luisa Argota moved to Santiago and threatened to divorce and claim half of their lands.

That is why Ángel pretended to be ruined and transferred the properties to his partner Fidel Pino Santos. The family that arose here had to exist clandestinely until the waters calmed down. The landowner and his young lover had seven children, including Fidel Castro (in honor of his partner) and his brother Raul.

To hide the existence of the illegitimate children, the Galician decided to send the children to live with his close friends, the Haitian consul in Santiago, Hippólite Hibbert, and his wife Emercianne. Fidel was then 4 years old. When he was sent as an inmate to the College of La Salle, his companions repeatedly humiliated him for his bastard origin, for having an illiterate servant mother and for not being baptized, calling him a “Jew.”
Angel Castro did not marry her until 1943, when she had already divorced Maria Argota. It was then that Fidel and his brothers were admitted as legitimate children. That late recognition meant, according to some biographers, a child trauma for the Cuban president.

Ángel María Castro, un joven y humilde gallego que emigró a Cuba a fines del siglo XIX, ha pasado a la posteridad por ser el padre de Fidel Castro., aquí un interesante relato de la vida del padre de los Castro y su descendencia.
En un extremo de Láncara está la humilde vivienda en la que nació en diciembre de 1875. Láncara es un municipio español perteneciente a la provincia de Lugo, en la Comunidad Autónoma de Galicia.
Como buen emigrante transatlántico, Ángel María Castro Argiz tuvo varias vidas. Padre de doce hijos de dos matrimonios, fue campesino en Lugo, panadero en Madrid, soldado en Cuba, afamado tahúr en Galicia, , regresó a Galici, emigrante de nuevo en la isla, contratista de la multinacional estadounidense United Fruit Company y rico terrateniente, cacique de una extensión de 11.000 hectáreas.
Sin embargo, su más espectacular identidad se está construyendo cincuenta años después de su muerte, la de patriarca de una dinastía comunista, la de Fidel y Raúl Castro, los hermanos que se traspasan el poder en Cuba con la naturalidad propia de una monarquía.
No narraremos como llegó a ser un rico terrateniente en Cuba, pero les dejo la foto de la finca familiar, en Birán. Está ubicado geográficamente al centro norte de la antigua provincia de Oriente, que pertenecía al término judicial Mayarí.
En 1911 Ángel Castro se casó con María Argota Reyes, con la que tuvo cinco hijos, aunque dos de ellos murieron al poco de nacer. María era una profesora y Ángel ya se había convertido en un poderoso terrateniente.
Después apareció otra mujer, Lina Ruz, hija de una familia que trabajaba en la hacienda y que hacía de cocinera en la casa principal. Durante un tiempo mantuvieron el romance en secreto, pero al enterarse María Luisa Argota se trasladó a Santiago y amenazó con divorciarse y reclamar la mitad de sus tierras.

Es por ello que Ángel simuló estar arruinado y traspasó las propiedades a su socio Fidel Pino Santos. La familia que de aquí surgió tuvo que existir de forma clandestina hasta que las aguas se calmaron. El terrateniente y su joven amante tuvieron siete hijos, entre los que se encontraban tanto Fidel Castro (en honor al socio mencionado) como su hermano Raúl.

Para esconder la existencia de los hijos ilegítimos, el gallego decidió enviar a los niños a vivir con sus amigos próximos, el cónsul haitiano en Santiago, Hippólite Hibbert, y su esposa Emercianne. Fidel tenía entonces 4 años. Cuando fue enviado como interno al Colegio de La Salle, sus compañeros lo humillaron repetidamente por su origen bastardo, por tener como madre a una criada analfabeta y por no estar bautizado, llamándolo «judío».
Ángel Castro no se casó con ella hasta 1943, cuando ya se había divorciado de María Argota. Fue entonces cuando admitió como hijos legítimos a Fidel y a sus hermanos. Ese tardío reconocimiento supuso, según algunos biógrafos, un trauma infantil para el mandatario cubano.
