Laura Martínez de Carvajal, born on August 27, 1869, was the first woman to graduate as a doctor in Cuba on July 15, 1889.
An exceptional and, undoubtedly, unique case, as a girl endowed with beauty and a well-off economic position, the daughter of Spaniards settled in a relaxed social environment with access to the most exclusive circles, she became interested in a profession in which only the They expected hard sacrifices and permanent discrimination, product of the prejudices of the time.
Let’s not forget that the young people of her time and environment were dedicated exclusively to the home, to housework and music, mainly the piano, preparing for what was described as a “good wife”.
Laura collects these teachings, embroiders exquisitely, plays the piano, attends primary and secondary studies and, at the time of guiding the activities of her life, decides to study simultaneously, at the University of Havana, Physical-Mathematical Sciences and Medicine consecrating This last his life. Imagine how many incomprehensions, criticisms, ridicule, I would have to face.
The development of her life has been described as “precocious girl”. When she was four years old, she read straight, at eleven she fulfills all her school tasks and obligations, she works as a gardener and horticulturist, she reads how much books fall into her hands, she takes care of her younger siblings and at twenty she receives her bachelor’s degree in medicine, first issued at the University, in the name of a woman.
During her adolescence and youth Laura surrounded a group of women and men of lucid minds that were fundamental in the development of their innate faculties, among these young talents was also the benefactor influence of Felipe Poey, dean of the Faculty of Science and who offered to the new generation stimulus and facilities.
Once graduated, she married Dr. Enrique López Veitía, a native of Santa Clara. He founds the Polyclinic of Specialties and in it spouses work, distinguishing themselves as ophthalmologists.
In 1910 her husband dies, and the extraordinary woman finds herself alone facing her profession, the care and education of her children. In the later years of life, Laura lived them in the El Retiro farm that she acquired near the town of San Francisco de Paula, where she established a free school to teach literacy to the rural children of the area and take care of her garden and fruit trees.
Practically forgotten, on January 24, 1941, surrounded by flowers and fruits, and of peasant children whom she taught to read, Laura Martínez de Carvajal died, this example of courage, will and history.

Laura Martínez de Carvajal, nacida el 27 de agosto de 1869, fue la primera mujer que se graduó de médico en Cuba el 15 de julio de 1889.
Un caso excepcional y, sin duda, único, pues una muchacha dotada de belleza y de acomodada posición económica, hija de españoles establecidos en un medio social desahogado y con acceso a los círculos más exclusivos, se interesó por una profesión en la que solo la esperaban duros sacrificios y permanente discriminación, producto de los prejuicios de la época.
No olvidemos que las jóvenes de su época y ambiente se dedicaban exclusivamente al hogar, a las labores de la casa y la música, fundamentalmente el piano, preparándose para lo que se calificaba de “buena esposa”.
Laura recoge estas enseñanzas, borda primorosamente, toca el piano, cursa los estudios primarios y secundarios y, a la hora de orientar las actividades de su vida, decide estudiar simultáneamente, en la Universidad de La Habana, Ciencias Físico-Matemáticas y Medicina consagrando a esta ultima su vida. Imagínense cuántas incomprensiones, críticas, burlas, tendría que enfrentar.
El desarrollo de su vida ha sido calificado de “niña precoz”. A los cuatro años leía de corrido, a los once cumple todos sus tareas y obligaciones escolares, se dedica a la jardinería y horticultura, lee cuanto libro cae en sus manos, cuida de sus hermanos menores y a los veinte años recibe su título de licenciada en medicina, primero que se expide en la Universidad, a nombre de una mujer.
Durante su adolescencia y juventud rodeó a Laura un grupo de mujeres y hombres de mentes lúcidas que fueron fundamentales en el desarrollo de sus innatas facultades, entre estos jóvenes talentos estaba también la influencia bienhechora de Felipe Poey, decano de la Facultad de Ciencia y quien brindó a la nueva generación estímulo y facilidades.
Ya graduada contrae matrimonio con el doctor Enrique López Veitía, natural de Santa Clara. Funda la Policlínica de Especialidades y en ella trabajan los esposos, distinguiéndose como oftalmólogos.
El 1910 fallece su esposo, y la extraordinaria mujer se encuentra sola haciéndole frente a su profesión, al cuidado y educación de sus hijos. En los años posteriores de vida, Laura los vivió en la finquita El Retiro que adquirió cercana al poblado San Francisco de Paula, donde estableció una escuela gratuita para alfabetizar a los niños campesinos de la zona y cuidar su jardín y frutales.
Prácticamente olvidada, el 24 de enero de 1941, rodeada de flores y frutas, y de niños campesinos a los que enseñaba a leer, murió Laura Martínez de Carvajal, esta mujer ejemplo de coraje, voluntad e historia.
