The Guanahacabibes peninsula is the westernmost point of the island of Cuba. It is located in the province of Pinar del Río, in the municipality of Sandino and is sparsely populated. Its western end, Cabo San Antonio (in Spanish: Cabo San Antonio), is the westernmost point of Cuba.
In Cabo de San Antonio there are many caves. All the legends that emanated from that western Cuban site have a certain relationship because of the bats. There are thousands. They hang from the stones and fill the guano floor.
Beginning the history of our journey of historical legend we start at the Roncali Lighthouse, go one kilometer along the path of The Tombs and reach the Cave of La Sorda, which, according to speleologists, is 51 meters long and has a circular structure, with its humid environment and a giant stalagmite in the center. We are told by the legend that the vision of two women still exists there: one converted into an animal similar to an alligator and another, in majá. Both were enchanted by their own father to eternally guard a treasure hidden in the cave. The running of mouth for mouth for so many years explains that whoever manages to disenchant them will take as a reward the gold coins buried inside this unique rock formation.
Farther east, bordering the coast, is the so-called María la Gorda Beach. According to the local historiography, “María la Gorda was a Venezuelan indigenous woman brought by force on a pirate ship and abandoned to her fate. Others characterize her as the daughter of a Spanish navigator who was shipwrecked in those domains. They say that the plump woman settled in the Ensenada de Corriente, in the extreme west of Cuba, and to survive she provided food and female company to the crew of every ship that ventured into the area. ”
If we continue along our route and the legend we go to where were the barracks and the poor villages of Gururú, Carabelita, Bolondrón and Santa Cruz, maybe there is still some smell of death. There were established Spaniards and free blacks dedicated to the production of coal, the felling of trees and the production of honey. When they returned from their hard days of work, the absence of women exacerbated their fatigue and left him with options for fun. Maybe that’s why, when a female came to these places, the disputes for her were such that only ended with death. The winner then received the favors of the lady.
Thus, one after the other, the legends of Guanahacabibes follow each other, many of them linked to brave women, who suffered punishments or who simply had the misfortune to come into the world to please masculine desires.
You will have to feel closely the smell of mountain in the Cape of San Antonio, you will have to dodge bats and discover the caves. We will have to honor the protagonists of these stories and not fear the road. We all know that legends such as this in the most secluded region of the Cuban nation magnifies the pleasures of nature. And this has been our purpose to tell you what with the centuries of legends has come to our attention always attentive to how much history comes into our hands.
PENINSULA DE GUANAHACABIBES, LEYENDAS DE SUS MUJERES.
La península de Guanahacabibes es el punto más occidental de la isla de Cuba. Está ubicado en la provincia de Pinar del Río, en el municipio de Sandino y está escasamente poblado. Su extremo occidental, Cabo San Antonio (en español: Cabo San Antonio), es el punto más occidental de Cuba.
En el Cabo de San Antonio hay muchas cuevas. Todas las leyendas que emanaron de ese sitio occidental de Cuba tienen cierta relacion por culpa de los murciélagos. Hay millares. Cuelgan de las piedras y llenan el suelo de guano.
Empezando la historia de nuestro recorrido de leyenda historica empecemos en el Faro Roncali, avanzar un kilómetro por el camino de Las Tumbas y llegar hasta la Cueva de La Sorda que, según los espeleólogos, tiene 51 metros de longitud y una estructura circular, con su ambiente húmedo y una estalagmita gigante en el centro. Nos describe la leyenda que allí todavia existen la vision de dos mujeres: una convertida en un animal semejante a un caimán y otra, en majá. Ambas fueron hechizadas por su propio padre para que custodiaran eternamente un tesoro escondido en la caverna. El correr de boca en boca por tantos anos explicaa que quien logre desencantarlas se llevará como recompensa las monedas de oro enterradas dentro de esta singular formación rocosa.
Más hacia el este, rozando la costa, se encuentra la llamada la Playa María la Gorda. Según cuenta la historiografía local, “María la Gorda fue una indígena venezolana traída a la fuerza en un barco pirata y abandonada a su suerte. Otros la caracterizan como la hija de un navegante español que naufragó en esos dominios. Dicen que la rolliza mujer se asentó en la Ensenada de Corriente, en el extremo occidental de Cuba, y para sobrevivir suministró comida y compañía femenina a los tripulantes de cuanto navío se aventuraba por el área”.
Si continuamos junto a nuestro recorrido y la leyenda nos vamos hasta donde estaban los barracones y los poblados pobres de Gururú, Carabelita, Bolondrón y Santa Cruz, quizás todavía haya algún olor a muerte. Allí se establecían españoles y negros libres dedicados a la producción de carbón, la tala de árboles y la producción de miel. Cuando volvían de sus arduas jornadas de trabajo, la ausencia de mujeres exacerbaba sus cansancios y le restaba opciones de diversión. Quizás por eso, cuando una fémina llegaba a aquellos parajes, las disputas por ella eran tales que solo terminaban con la muerte. El vencedor recibía entonces los favores de la dama.
Así, una tras otra se suceden las leyendas de Guanahacabibes, muchas ligadas a mujeres valientes, que sufrieron castigos o que simplemente tuvieron la desgracia de venir al mundo para complacer deseos masculinos.
Habrá que sentir de cerca el olor a monte en el Cabo de San Antonio, habrá que esquivar murciélagos y descubrir las cuevas. Habrá que hacerle honores a las protagonistas de estas historias y no temerle al camino. Todos sabemos que las leyendas tal como esta en la region mas apartada de la nacion cubana magnifica los placeres de la naturaleza. Y este ha sido nuestro proposito al contarle lo que con los siglos de leyendas nos ha llegado a nuestra atención siempre atenta a cuanta historia llega a nuestras manos.
