DOT Approves More Cuba Flights For US-Based Airlines. United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines have been granted rights to operate flights to Cuba.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Cuba flights to United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines. These new routes and time slots come about as a result of other airlines surrendering their rights to fly to Cuba. The new route designations do not include any additional flights to Cuba.

Just two years ago, airlines were jockeying for the position to get the rights to fly to Cuba when the government first started allowing commercial flights to fly to the Caribbean island nation. The airlines believed that after 60 years of forbidding tourism to this country, the public would flock to Cuba.

The thing is, demand was not as great as anticipated, and new requirements imposed by the American government last year decreased demand even further. Many airlines opted to surrender their flights to Cuba so that they could dedicate their plans and flight times to more lucrative routes.

JetBlue, American Airlines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, however, bidding on these routes as soon as they became available under the belief that they could make these routes profitable and that interest in traveling to Cuba would heighten.

The new DOT approvals will give the airlines the right to operate the following Cuba routes:

JetBlue will have a Sunday through Friday flight from Ft. Lauderdale and a Saturday-only flight from Boston
Southwest Airlines will be granted a daily flight from Ft. Lauderdale
United Airlines will share its Sunday through Friday flights from Houston with Mesa Airlines
Delta Air Lines will have daily flights from Miami
American Airlines will have daily flights from Miami

The airlines can decide if they want to accept these terms or to file official objections with the Department of Transportation.
